"These are gorgeous," says Brenda, our midday meeting completely unnatural to what isn't exactly a friendship. "You have to submit these to a gallery. Did he use a negative?"
"Digital," I tell her and she clucks her tongue just once, a tiny memorial for another dead idea, and then she moves on.
"Do you trust me?"
"Sort of," I answer, feeling the intensity of her gaze boring its way into me. "He does."
"Yes," she says triumphantly, reaching down by her legs and pulling up a single sheet of paper to hand me.
"Wow," is all I can say. It's the most beautiful mock-up of a website I've ever seen.
"Sometimes they're great in the bedroom and in real life," she smiles. "The problem I see with all erotic models, porn or otherwise, is the talent is cut off from the distribution. You've broken that, mostly by accident, but still, it's a golden opportunity. Can you imagine full interactive eBooks with photos and video?"
"Not video," I say firmly, gently placing the mock-up down. "Not for me at least."
"Easily handled," she says, and I can see her gears shift effortlessly to another track. I completely understand why he finds her so compelling an assistant.
"Look," she says firmly, but quietly. "I haven't asked him, because I know he'll tell me to do it. But if you want, I think I've got just enough saved to devote a year to getting you from amateur to thought-leader of a new kind of empire."
"Really?"
"Definitely," she says, sitting back and sipping her iced tea. "I need to get out of there, as good as it is, I'm never going to get anywhere playing in their world. You've got a bullet here, but you need someone to aim it for you."
"So partners?" I ask, not even sure that's a business thing, but pretty certain I've heard it before.
"I'll set us up with a neutral lawyer," she tells me quickly. "She'll explain all the options and present you with her take on my plan. The three of us will hash out the details."
"Okay," I say, still hesitant, but that site, the idea of being able to afford all my basic living expenses, I'd be stupid not to at least hear more about it. "Why me though?"
"You don't make me want to rip off your dick and put it in a blender," she says without hesitation. "He and you are the only two men like that at the moment. Music is a nightmare, and books are going to die without some new ideas. I'd rather my children not grow up "reading" dumbed-down informercials for homework."
"You might try picking up a girl sometime," I muse, still feeling my dick cringe at the imagery of a blender.
"Who says I haven't," she winks at me before tossing some money down and walking away.
I may have a thing for dominance that needs to be explored.
