Washington, DC

His body drenched with sweat, his legs trembling, and his heart pounding, Blake plunged to his knees and buried his face in his hands.

And then it was over.

Langley, Virgnia

The dossier was highly classified, so they wondered how it could’ve been so easily compromised. The thief had entered the facility, somehow obtained access to the secure storeroom, thumbed through some of the CIA’s most sensitive physical files, and then vanished into the night. He had presented an identification card that had fooled both the computers and the security guards. To make matters worse, he’d tampered with the video camera in the storeroom. The picture frame was stilled at 10:05 p.m., showing an empty room at 10:30 p.m. The Agency had spent millions of dollars to prevent such a breach of security. Yet, in just under thirty minutes, under everyone’s nose, the dossier was gone.

Luckily, the cameras at the entrance and in the parking lot had remained functional. Security guards were in hot pursuit of the thief. All was not lost. The thief had exited the building and driven from the facility without interference before they knew what had happened. But it had taken only a few minutes to locate his vehicle on its way toward Washington, DC. Two officers were hot on his tail. They were just waiting for him to reach his destination. Then they’d apprehend him. If they were fortunate, he’d lead them to his co-conspirators. They could then round up the whole bunch. They were confident that he wouldn’t escape.

The thief surprised them, though, when he exited George Washington Parkway miles from DC and drove to a convenience store.

“Bad time to need cigarettes, huh?”

“Yep. Even geniuses make mistakes.”

“What do you wanna do?”

“Let’s stay in the car and wait for him to come out. Then we’ll grab him.”

“Alright.”

The CIA security guards watched the figure step out of the burgundy BMW and walk toward the entrance of the convenience store. He was of average height for a man his age. His mustache was dark and bushy. He wore a black hat better suited for the mid-twentieth century. The two officers in the black, unmarked car drove into the parking lot just before the thief walked into the store.

“Did you get a good look?”

“That’s him. Same guy we picked up on the exterior cameras. This is too easy.”

“Yep.”

“You wanna grab him when he comes out, or should we see if he leads us to the others?”

“There may not be any others, and I don’t want to risk it. Let’s just do this now. An effective interrogation will lead us to any others.”

“You wanna get the file from the car while we’re waiting?”

“No, let’s catch him red-handed.”

“He might have the file with him, though.”

“I doubt there’s a paper shredder in the store. We’ll find it.”

“Well, he could be going in there to read it.”

“So what? He may have already read it. We’ll have him in custody soon, so it doesn’t matter.”

“And what if he makes a pass?”

“Well, that’s a good point. Make sure you check anyone who comes out.
