Grant Kendall arrived at an opportune moment. Roddy had come to a halt with his game and couldn’t find out how to go on with it. Jill and Vanessa were trying to read the instructions, but all three of them had come to an impasse when Bill called up to them.

“Mr. Kendall’s here,” he told Jill over the intercom.

“Send him up.”

“I’ve got stuck with the game,” was Roddy’s greeting when Grant appeared at their door a few minutes later.

“Have you? We’ll have to see what we can do. Hello again,” Grant said to Vanessa.

She’d remembered the blue eyes, but had forgotten about the warmth of his smile and the way it warmed those eyes. She returned the smile and then ushered him into the living room. “This is my dearest friend, Jill Nelson . . .” She paused in sudden confusion. Dear God, they’d forgotten to work out the names.

“Another Jill Nelson?” Grant said, amusement lurking in his eyes.

Jill was no help. She threw back her head and laughed like a hyena.

“Thanks a lot,” Vanessa told her. “Great friend you are.” She turned back to Grant, her face flushed with embarrassment. “I’m sorry. I think I’m going to have to explain.”

Grant held up both hands. “No need. I can always call you Jill One and Jill Two.”

“We’re running away from my father.” Roddy’s sudden announcement came out of the blue, effectively putting an end to the conversation for several seconds.

Grant’s black eyelashes blinked rapidly for a moment and then he unzipped his jacket. “I should hang this up before it drips water all over your floor,” he said.

“Give it to me.” Jill took it from him. “I’ll hang it in the bathroom.” She frowned at Vanessa and then went into the hall.

“Would you like some coffee?” Vanessa asked Grant, to fill the awkward silence.

“Love some. It’s not only wet out there, it’s also extremely cold. I’d forgotten how miserable Vancouver can be at this time of year. Seattle’s even worse. Nonstop rain.”

They were into that safest and most universal of topics, the weather. “It’s so changeable,” Vanessa said. “Look how lovely it was yesterday.”

“It was. More like a day in northern California.”

Vanessa smiled. “Of course. I’d forgotten that’s where you live. No wonder you’re feeling the cold. The weather was good yesterday, but the rest of it was dreadful.” She looked directly at Grant. “I can’t thank you enough for all you did for us. I should be the one sending the presents, not you.”

“Not at all.” He made a gesture at the sofa. “May I?”

“Of course.”

Grant sat down next to Roddy, who was kneeling at the table, trying to get his game going again. “Let’s take a look at this,” he said.

Jill came back into the room. “How about that coffee?”

“I was just about to make it,” Vanessa said.

“I’ll do it. Got anything to eat with it?”

“There’s some of that apple pie left . . . and oatmeal cookies.”

The two male heads were bent over the game, one golden and bandaged, the other dark, almost black.
