"Ho-ly crap."
Grace stared through the windshield up at the massive mansion in front of her. After they'd made their way through a gate and up a long, winding driveway, they approached a white house covered in windows. It looked about double the size of Henry's house. A series of Grecian columns marked the entrance. As she poked her head out the window, she heard the sounds of waves crashing on the shore.
"I've never been to his house. This is.. This is... Wow."
Declan chuckled, a more high-pitched laugh than normal, as they climbed out of the car.
"What?" she asked, looking up at him.
"He's rich." He looked down at her, an amused grin wide across his face. "This is why you get famous."
She rolled her eyes. He was incorrigible. She started up to the house on her own, letting him follow her.
The house's doorbell sounded like a cathedral bell. "Dude," Declan whispered. She pushed her elbow into his side.
Her breath caught in her chest as they waited by the door. It's just Simon, she reminded herself. Was it his house making her this nervous?
When the front door opened, she stood a little straighter. But the young woman it revealed stood back. She must work for Simon.
She ushered them into what must be his living room. A plush beige sectional stood in the corner in front of the flat-screen television that covered most of the wall. As she and Declan took a seat, balancing on its edge, she glanced around at the various gold and platinum records hanging on the wall.
"This is so cool." Declan's voice sounded like someone awed in church.
"You said that."
"No. I think I just said, 'Dude.'"
"Same thing."
"Shhh!" he exclaimed. "He might hear you say that."
"Say what?" a new voice asked.
Grace knew that voice. It played a huge part in her life. She turned and grinned as Simon, looking comfortable in jeans and a navy sweater, moved into the room.
A smile lit his face, as bright and handsome as ever, but there was something guarded in his clear blue eyes, something that made Grace gulp. "Hey, Grace."
The warmth in his voice made her think her suspicions about him might be wrong. She stood. "Hey, Simon."
Grace wrapped her arms around his neck, and he returned her hug with a tight squeeze. "It's been a long time," he muttered before pulling away.
By the time she blinked, Simon had doubled around to approach Declan. "And who's this?"
"Uh..." Declan stammered. Grace tried to bite back her grin. This star-struck man she brought along with her never disappointed. "I'm, uh..." His eyes shot to her, pleading for help.
She chuckled. "That's my friend, Declan Kane. He's a fan, so I told him he could come with me."
Simon lifted his eyebrows. "A fan, huh?" He stepped over to Declan and offered his hand. "It's nice to meet you, Declan Kane."
Declan didn't stand. He didn't move. Instead, he stared up at Simon with a slack jaw and eyes full of reverence. Grace sighed. He would be insufferable when she introduced him to her father.
