FIREBUG
Burn!
Come on come on come onâburn!
âWhatâs taking so long? You sure you set the timer right?â
âI know how to do it, donât I?â
âItâs been fifteen minutes already.â
âI set it for twenty. I just wanted to be sure we had enough time.â
âShit. Fifteen was all we needed. Whatâs the matter with you?â
âYou know what the matter is. I just donât think we should be doing this again so soon.â
âWhy not? You like it as much as I do.â
âIâve got a bad feeling, thatâs all. So soon after . . . Manuel.â
Burn, damn you, burn!
âWe had to kill him. We didnât have any choice.â
âI know, but God, I can still see his face. It makes me sick.â
âEverything makes you sick. Here, smoke a joint, get calmed down.â
âI donât want one right now.â
âItâs better when youâre high, you know that.â
âIâll just take a hit off yours. . . .â
âNo. Fire up your own.â
Small flame, hot, bright, but gone too quick.
âDoesnât it bother you? A little?â
âWhat?â
âWhat we did to Manuel.â
âNo. Iâm just glad he came to us first. If he hadnât . . .â
âI keep having nightmares about it. The sound when you hit him with the board, the blood, the way his head looked. And his face after we dragged him up on the rope . . . we didnât have to do that.â
âI had to. I never saw anybody hanging before. Besides, it wasnât as messy as beating his head in.â
âHe was already dead, wasnât he?â
âNo, he wasnât. He was still breathing.â
âOh Jesus!â
âWhy do you think he danced like he did when we pulled him up, why his tongue turned all black? He strangled on that rope.â
âDonât!â
âYouâre a baby, baby.â
âI canât help it. It took so long, we almost didnât get away after you hit that detective. You didnât have to hit him; he didnât know we were there.â
âI wanted to hit him. So I did.â
âHeâd be gone by now if you hadnât. He scares me. Heâs not stupid. What if heâ?â
âNot stupid, but not as smart as I am. None of them are.â
âBut if we keep on the way we have beenââ
âWeâre not going to.â
âWeâre not? No lie?â
âWeâre going to get even more creative. More fun, more payback.â
âOh God, fun. Do we have to . . . you know?â
âWeâve already done it. The fireâs just the finishing touch.â
âI donât think I want to be there. . . .â
âWell, youâre going to. You know you always do what I want you to.â
âI know, butââ
âSay it.â
â. . . I always do what you want me to.â
âTell me why.â
âYou know why.â
âI want to hear you say it.â
âI love you.â
âAgain.â
âI love you.â
âI love you, too. Most of the time. Hey, you know what wouldâve been really cool? If we couldâve hung Runyon, too. Right next to Manuel, side by side, like in those old cowboy flicks.â
âThatâs gross! Sometimes . . .â
âSometimes what?â
âYou scare me. Youâre so . . .â
âSo what? Crazy? Maybe I am; I donât care. Taking risks, having fun, getting even, thatâs what itâs all about.
