I avoid Giovanni for the rest of the day, and after an hour around the pool with the girls, I head to my room, change, and find the peace and haven of the library.

I’ll miss the library the most when I go home, but I’ve already decided to make Father’s library as special as this one. Oh, it won’t have the same wondrous ceiling, or the views, but we have our own wonderful views. I’m also going to overrule Grandmother and open the house up, use it for weddings and other events. It can pay for itself, so I don’t have to pay for it by marrying someone I don’t like. No more being a doormat for me.

By the end of the day, I’m feeling better. I also have a plan. Lull Giovanni into a false sense of security. Find a chance. Leave. Go home. Stand up to Grandmother. Take control of my own destiny.

Simple. Perfect on paper, probably harder to execute, but still, it’s a way forward.

I close the pages of the book I’m logging and stretch my arms. My upper body aches after being bent over books for hours. I could do with a massage. I bet if I asked Gio for one, he’d order someone in. I sigh. What a life I could live if I had the sort of morals that could overlook of all Gio’s glaring character faults.

I can’t, though, and so I must accept as much. I push my chair back and take a look around the room. I think I might love this library even more than I love Gio. I laugh at that. I’m like Eliza Bennet, who I am sure was only half joking when she claimed her love for Darcy dated back to first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.

The library door closes behind me, and my footsteps echo across the tiled floor. The hallway is empty, except for me and my two shadows. I ignore the shadows, something which has become easier over time. If I can convince Gio I want him once more, they might soon be gone. He also seems mildly jealous of them, which is odd, seeing as he’s the one who ordered them to watch me, but if I play up to that, it might hasten their departure.

I take my time walking along the corridor. It’s cool here, with a soft breeze blowing in from somewhere, and the statues dotted around seem to watch me as I stroll past. I could be in an art gallery as much as a home.

Yes, I do believe when I leave this place, some of the spell Giovanni has me under will ease. Once I’m back home, I can let my heart heal, and one day, find love with someone much more suitable.

I reach my room, enter it, and sigh when I see the dress hanging from a hanger, along with a bag, shoes, underwear and, Jesus, Gio, perfume on the side table.

The dress has a note pinned to it, stating: wear me.
