CHAPTER 14

What Just Happened?

My mom was at a game with Jack, and the house was quiet. I went upstairs and just sat with my favorite stuffed animal, which I have had since I was two. I hugged it and the tears fell. I just couldn’t seem to get that fairytale life we all so dream about. But then again, neither had my mom or many other women. I wasn’t unique.

My phone rang. It was Nick. I answered. I needed my friend now.

“Uh-oh, sounds like someone had a bad day.”

I was so glad he had called right then. Nick and I had this connection. Not a love connection, well, I did love him, but like a brother and he loved me like a sister. That kind of thing.

“Oh, Nick, I am so lost right now.”

“What’s going on? Trouble with the boyfriend?”

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my emotions in check, but this time they just weren’t staying down.

“Mike got a part on a show that would require him to be on set for the rest of the school year.”

“Go on.” Apparently, that wasn’t drama enough for him.

“His co-star and love interest is Macy.”

“Oh.”

That was enough for me to know that Nick saw the problem.

“The show would be really good for his career, and—”

“He feels that he has to take it despite the fact that Macy would be controlling his every move and have him kicked off if he defies her by being with you?” Nick finished my sentence. Something he was annoyingly good at. How he had fit that into one breath was amazing.

“Yes. Well, he hasn’t said that, but—”

“Jess,” Nick sighed. “I get where he’s coming from, but if you meant that much to him, then I think he would pass and hope to make it on his own. Honestly, that is what I would do.”

He was right. Mike had a choice. He was auditioning for other parts without Macy’s help. He could have given up on that part.

Nick and I talked about him coming. That made me feel better. Next Monday he would be here. I felt like I could breathe again. After I got off the phone with Nick, I did my homework and put on the TV for some distraction. And of course, there it was. A commercial for the upcoming series Mike was going to be on. Yep. You know how they do it. Especially the main characters, who seem so close. It didn’t show Mike, but it did show Macy, with about five times more makeup than she normally wore.

I realized a long time ago that Macy was all artificial. You name it, lashes, nose job for sure, to just name a few. But why? She wasn’t unattractive. Really, she wasn’t. But without all the aids she would just be like a regular high school girl.

I just changed the channel. Why is it money wins over sincerity in this business? There were probably dozens of girls who were better actresses than Macy. My phone rang. It was Mike.
