I stifled a yawn upon entering the centre of the bamboo garden, where the sandy circle lay. Takeda stood there, expertly twirling his katana around his wrist with an air of nonchalance. The man never seemed to wear a shirt, but given his impressive physique, I couldn’t blame him. I, too, wanted to flaunt even the slightest progress in my physical development as of late.

“What’s on the agenda today?” I asked, hands clasped behind my head as I gazed up at the morning sky.

Does it rain inside the dome?

Takeda’s piercing blue eyes met mine as I refocused on him. “Daiki wants to force you to activate the curse. He believes that by not doing so, we’re hindering your ability to obtain the sword.”

“Okay, but what if I end up stuck in wolf form permanently? That’s not exactly in my plans,” I pointed out.

As Takeda circled me, he replied, “That’s one of the concerns I raised.”

“What were the other concerns?”

“I won’t force anyone to bear the burden of the curse. They must choose it willingly. I refuse to be part of denying someone that choice.”

“So, what does that mean for me?”

Takeda stopped spinning the sword. “It means I’ll ensure you’re strong enough to evade them until the blood moon passes.”

I hesitated. “By ‘them,’ you mean the Komandā?”

Takeda responded candidly, his hand tightly clutching the hilt of his katana, “Precisely. It’s a challenge that most could never even fathom conquering. Daiki harbours doubts about your true strength and will likely have them observe you during the ritual.”

“Didn’t you inform him that I’m weak?”

Takeda gave a slight nod. “I mentioned that I was uncertain at the moment. It’s smart for a demon in your situation to play weak, given that you’re in the presence of the mightiest mortal in existence. Had you shown any hint of strength or made demands, you wouldn’t have been allowed to utter another word.”

Should I simply let them do it? Resisting could jeopardise my chances of obtaining the Twisted Fate. I had to determine whether sacrificing an innocent life was a price worth paying for a weapon that, if I was brutally honest with myself, was intended for exacting revenge on Cain.

Resolving the rift dilemma seemed beyond my grasp, but I couldn’t reveal my doubts. I had to feign confidence, for honesty wouldn’t advance my cause. My role in this is unclear, especially after witnessing the cataclysmic emergence from the rift in Endeavor. Such a challenge calls for an army, not a solitary seventeen-year-old. Yet, here I am, strategizing to possess the most powerful weapon in existence.

“Would surrender be the wiser choice?” I suggested. “I don’t want to step on any toes, considering I am at the mercy of the Guild.”

Takeda stared me in the eyes for a moment. “Is that what you want?”

Anxiety tightened my throat as I replied. “No, that’s not what I desire. The danger of being forever trapped in my wolf form is far too great, and the thought of harming an innocent is abhorrent to me.
