Chapter 13
Once they got to the station, Jimmy was thrilled that Emily wanted a tour first thing. He was proud of where he worked and loved that she was interested. Except that she was still really limping.
âBut your toes,â Jimmy said. He didnât want to have to watch her hobbling around. She was always too tough for her own good.
âI can limp around this station,â Emily said. âItâs not huge and Iâm not a baby. Plus you said there wasnât much I could do for them.â
âIce and elevate,â Jimmy said.
She rolled her eyes. âAfter I see the station. Iâve never been in one, if you can believe that.â
Beau grinned. âJimmy, just be her crutch. Let her lean on you. If need be, carry her like you did in the parking lot. She canât weigh more than a buck twenty.â
Jimmy gave Beau a look Emily couldnât see. Subtle, man. Beau just raised his eyebrows and kept smiling.
âLet me tape them up first,â Jimmy said.
He helped Emily to a seat in the bay after they parked the truck. Beau and Robbie carried up the groceries while Jimmy found a roll of duct tape. He knelt at her feet and propped her heel on his knee. Tenderly he began to tape the two swollen toes together.
âReally? Duct tape? I thought you were, like, trained.â
âBelieve it or not, Iâve found that this works better than the athletic or first-aid tape. Is this too tight?â
She touched his shoulder and it sent a wave of awareness through his body. âIt feels good. Thank you.â
Nervous, he found his mouth firing off facts. âThis is called buddy taping. You may need to change it out, but itâs safe to shower and everything else. If you re-tape it, I put a cotton ball in there, which will help keep your skin from getting irritated. In probably about six weeks, you wonât feel it anymore. Until then, you can just do whatever activity level youâre comfortable with, but for the next few days, ice and elevate. And rest.â
He looked up to find that she was grinning at him.
Beau and Robbie came back from upstairs. âReady for the tour?â Beau said. He gave Emily a hand and she got to her feet. Jimmy put away the duct tape.
âOkay, Crutch. Get over here,â Emily called.
Jimmy stepped closer and she leaned into him, wrapping her arms around his waist. He slung his arm around her, pulling her even closer.
âThatâs better,â Emily said. âNow. Show me all the things.â
Robbie trailed along with Beau and Jimmy. He was not subtle in checking Emily out and Jimmy felt a surge of anger. Heâd make sure Robbie heard about it later.
âThereâs no pole?â Emily said. âI was kind of excited about the pole.â
âMost stations donât have them anymore,â Beau said.
âThatâs a shame.â Emily said.
âYou know your way around a pole?â Robbie said this with the maximum amount of innuendo.
Kill him. Jimmyâs thoughts were immediately rage-filled to the point he couldnât even speak. Heâd felt flashes of this before when guys had openly ogled Emily, but had never heard someone make a comment like this.
