Chapter Twenty-Seven
The room had grown silent again as one by one they fell into a deep sleep. Kylen took advantage to climb to his feet and survey the occupants. They looked so young in sleep, but not innocent. That had been stolen from them even in sleep. Gryph and Nix were as usual wrapped tightly wrapped around each other. Cratus and Thanatos were next to them, followed by Odin and Kylen’s empty spot, then came Raven, Ghost and Brandt, and finally Chaos and Ash. All eleven bodies were pressed tightly together so that each touched the one beside them. Even in sleep they connected, legs entwined, arms latched together, some spooned but all touched the ones on either side.
Kylen wasn't sure how but he had quickly discovered the peace of mind it brought to be wrapped so tightly in the warmth of those you trusted like these guys. If anyone had asked him a couple of weeks ago if he would ever sleep with a group of men like this he would have laughed his ass off. Now, it felt natural. Just him and Odin, by himself or with all of his brothers like this. It didn't matter. It was just what was needed for all of them, even if they hadn't known it.
"Son, you okay?" Josh whispered from behind making Kylen jump in surprise.
"Hey, dad. Yeah, I just got up to use the bathroom and took a moment to check on everyone."
"I was doing the same thing, checking on everyone I mean."
"Dad, can I ask you a question?"
"Of course, always. What's on your mind?"
"It's this. I look at them and I want to cry. Even in sleep, they look tortured, and hurt. They look as if they are ready to battle at any moment. This is the first time I have seen most of them sleep and it's for lack of a better word ugly."
"What's your question?"
"How am I supposed to fit into this? He is my everything, my heart and soul, my life and the air I breathe. But I can't fix him, any of them. It hurts, Dad."
Josh sighed and gave a resigned sad smile. "Son, that's just it. You already fit in. Look even in sleep none of them have moved to fill your spot. That is where you belong, next to your man, with your brothers, side by side." Josh paused for a second and looked into Kylen's eyes. "You mustn't ever forget one thing. Family is more important than anything else. Don't ever turn your back on them, don't ever stop fighting for them and don't ever let them fight alone."
Josh turned and pointed to the men lying on the sleeping bags, "That tortured, hurt look you speak of, the ready for battle look is what they are doing. Even in sleep, they must battle the demons that haunt them. They have no peace, no place to rest and no respite from the pain that lashes at them every minute of every day. You want to help, and then you go stand by them.
