Chapter TWELVE

“My own damn fault.” Bree sighed loudly as she turned away from the front door of Eleos’ building and walked back to her car. She should’ve checked what time Heike Müller’s offices opened before she jumped in her car and drove to Cologne.

It had been an uneasy night after she returned from the concert. She’d tried to sleep, but had only managed five restless hours. It was not enough and even after two large and strong coffees at home, she felt the need for another kick of caffeine. Since Heike would only be in her office in an hour’s time, Bree decided this might be as good a time as any to return to the coffee shop she’d noticed on her first visit two days ago.

Since she’d arrived before eight, she’d been able to get good parking, so she left her car where it was and walked to the coffee shop. To her delight the shop was open and the line not long. A few minutes later, she was sitting at a small table, enjoying a blueberry and white chocolate cupcake and an extra-large cup of coffee.

For a moment she considered taking out her tablet and going through her notes, but decided to instead enjoy the rare moment of quiet. Not that the narrow street outside was quiet. Traffic had increased and consequently slowed down in the main street. The street directly outside the cupcake shop was marginally quieter, but every parking space had already filled up and people cluttered the pavement.

Elegantly dressed women and men in suits rushed to their offices. Bree wondered where the jeans-wearing people were rushing to. She amused herself counting how many people out of twenty were speaking on or looking at their phones as they passed her spot by the window. She counted thirteen.

And froze.

Her cupcake fell from her hand and she gasped in air when she realised she wasn’t breathing.

Walking on the other side of the street was Tattoo Guy. There was no mistaking the tattoo on the side of his neck. Or his stride. It was the same predatory confidence she’d witnessed on the screen of her panic room tablet. She forced herself to take two deep breaths.

Tattoo Guy was in Cologne.

He hadn’t seen her, of that she was confident. He hadn’t even glanced towards her side of the street and his stride was relaxed and loose. Bree didn’t hesitate. She shrugged into her winter coat, grabbed her messenger bag and hurried out of the door.

Tattoo Guy was still on the other side of the street, blending in with the flow of the other pedestrians. His jeans, hiking boots and black leather jacket were similar to at least five people on this street. Nothing about him stood out. Not even the blue backpack slung over one shoulder.

Bree decided to stay on this side of the street so she would have a better view of him. Having done her fair share of investigations into shady characters, this was not the first time Bree had followed someone.
