CHAPTER 6: THE PROM PROBLEM

THE next day, they sat at their usual table at lunch with most of Caleb’s swim team. Nico sat on one side of Caleb, Liam on the other. Nico had another bruise along his jawline, and Caleb’s anger had simmered all morning.

Liam leaned in. “Who are you taking to junior prom?”

Caleb didn’t take his eyes from the cafeteria line. He was starving and wished the line would move faster. “Not going.”

“Come on, bro, you gotta go. You going, Nico?”

“No, and I’m dodging Jennifer Jensen. Warn me if you see her.”

Jealousy pricked Caleb’s spine, and he turned to Nico. The thought of Nico with someone else, in someone else’s arms, made him physically ill. If anyone went near him or, God forbid, dared to touch him, he’d become homicidal.

“She’s hot,” Liam said casually.

Nico rolled his eyes. “She sounds like a mouse when she speaks.”

A frown knitted Caleb’s brow as jealousy and anger ate at his nerves. “You want to go to prom?” He regretted asking the question the moment it left his lips. It didn’t sound right. It wasn’t a guy question.

Nico saw the jealousy in Caleb’s eyes and quickly sought to reassure him. “No way. There’s no one I like. Besides, I can’t dance.”

“Just come and hang out, then,” Liam pressed.

Nico snorted. “Yeah, can you imagine? Me hanging around like a wallflower? With my luck, someone like Mandy Tomkins would hit on me.”

Liam barked a laugh. “Hella-gross.”

“She likes you too?” Caleb asked carefully.

“Don’t know, don’t care.”

Josh leaned around Liam. “Crystal Kenner likes you.”

Caleb’s anger welled, an ugly, thick blob in his mind.

Nico leaned in. “Who?”

Josh whispered loudly across the table. “The little redhead from England.”

Caleb turned to Josh. “How do you know?”

“She told my sister that she’s waiting to see if Nico will ask her.”

Jeremy joined the conversation. “Carly Adams likes you too, Nico. She stares at you constantly in English.”

The angry blob in Caleb’s mind popped like a rancid balloon. “Shit, Nico, you got a fucking harem. Congratulations.” He stood abruptly, further irritated that he couldn’t keep the anger from his voice. “I’m gonna get food. Want anything?”

Nico stood. “I’ll go with you.”

“Get me an apple juice,” Liam called after them.

Caleb set a salad on his tray none too gently.

“Don’t,” Nico whispered.

The single word was enough to push Caleb over the edge. He shoved the tray and stormed away, the tray crashing to the floor in his wake. He made his way down the hall and bulldozed through the bathroom door when he reached it. A loud bang echoed off the tile as it bounced against the wall and slammed shut. He went to a stall and pounded his fist against the hollow, metal door, then kicked it for good measure. Fuck! What the hell is the matter with you, Deering? Did you really think you and Nico could make it through high school without dating girls? Yeah. Unfortunately, he had. Dumb shit. Now he’d made an ass out of himself at lunch. Perfect. How the hell was he going to explain that? Sorry, guys.
