Chapter Eleven

It was strange… I had died twice already and woken up in my resurrected body, but walking toward the exit of our shack with Mum at my side—knowing that I was the alpha was like a rebirth.

Mum flung her arms around my body, squeezing me into a bone-crushing hug. “This is where you should have been raised, instead of that awful shack. If I had been stronger that night—”

“You were pregnant, and they ambushed you.” I placed my hands on her thin shoulders, trying to keep her tethered to the present. “The shack was cozy, and our neighbors were nice. If I have to blame anyone, it’s Alpha Mondo, and he’s dead.”

Her eyes dimmed. “Do you regret killing your mate?”

I tilted my head to the side. Apart from a little trouble getting an erection, Beowulf had had no qualms about authorizing my death. If I’d still been attached to my wolf, the pain of betraying him would have been unbearable. I couldn’t tell Mum this out loud in case some eavesdropper decided to tell everyone that I was a shifter with only half a soul.

“That day he dismissed me was one of the worst I’d ever endured because I left this house doubting my instincts. It still hurt years later.”

Mum nodded. “You never told me, but I could immediately tell that something had gone wrong.”

“Why didn’t you ask?” I said.

“You’d been stripped of everything—your birthright, your status in the pack. I couldn’t strip you of your privacy.”

I nodded. “Well, I have no regrets. The moment he allowed the shaman to sacrifice me on that altar, he stopped being my mate.”

She placed a hand on my cheek. “Go out there, and show them who truly leads this pack.”

We stepped through the front door, into Nivalis Row, where more people than ever had gathered on the streets to gape. The afternoon sun hung high in the sky, bringing out the stench of rodent droppings.

Beowulf’s unmoving body lay in the middle of the road, his head still twisted as I had left it during our battle. His former enforcers all separated from their huddle, standing to attention as I approached.

Fenrir broke away from the group and grinned, his turquoise eyes shining with pride. The sun shone down on his curls, making them vibrant as spun gold.

“Congratulations, alpha,” he said in a deep, seductive voice that made my skin tingle. His gaze raked up and down my form, then lingered on my lips.

My heart fluttered, and I sucked in a deep breath. How many men would congratulate a woman for having gained a position of dominance? None. They’d all act like the wolves on the street—jumpy and suspicious.

I returned Fenrir’s smile. Winning this challenge was all thanks to him. Him, his encouragement, and the loan of his power.

Mum stood beside me, her frail body trembling. Not with fear but with a jittery excitement I couldn’t yet fathom. Perhaps it was because she’d held on all these years to the hope that I might
