I’m covered in sweat when I return to the bus. My anger was left on the head of my snare, but my stress still trickles through my veins.

Sabina wasn’t Sabina tonight. She was lackluster at best, stiff and lifeless as she sang her songs. Her head stayed straight ahead as she sang and her usual hype and dancing was at an all time low. Gabe’s words weighed heavy on her and at the moment, I have no idea what to do about it. The only thing that sounds halfway appealing is grabbing a beer from the refrigerator and mulling over the next few days. There has to be a way that we can make this work without anyone catching on.

Maybe taking Sabina on a date wasn’t the smartest idea, but the girl has been sheltered by her mother for so long and she deserves to experience what it’s like to live. Contrary to her mother’s belief, she’s not some porcelain doll, best kept in a cabinet, tucked safely behind a plate of glass. Sabina can’t keep living like that.

As I take a hearty swig of my beer, Vance, Gary and Cain climb on board. All three are on a high, completely oblivious to Sabina’s plight. All they can ever think of is women. Ogling them. Using them. Defiling them.

It wasn’t that long ago that I acted just like them. But I don’t know how they didn’t even notice the change in Sabina tonight. Or maybe they just don’t give a shit.

Taking another swig of my beer, I try not to be angry with them, but it’s hard. As the guys go on and on about the women in the audience, I stare out of the bus, hoping for a glimpse of Sabina.

After thirty minutes of gawking, I spot Sabina walking out of the stadium with Gabe at her side. I can’t make out what he’s saying, but from the set of his jaw and the sneer on his face, I’d guess he’s ripping into Sabina for something.

My fist clenches as I watch her head fall before she steps onto her bus. I’m drawn to that bus and almost stand up to exit my own, just to console her, but I know that I’d only make things worse, so I keep my ass planted and continue tossing back my beer.

After another half hour and a few more beers, I decide I’m better off passing out in my bunk and putting my anger to bed. But once I’m in my bunk, the darkness that surrounds me brings images of Sabina and I’m left brooding all on my own.

When I finally fall asleep, I’m met with images of a teary-eyed Sabina, her body trembling in my arms, Gabe breathing down her neck and a helplessness settles in. When I wake, I’m sweating while my heart beats a thousand miles a minute.

Usually, dreams of Sabina bring me a sense of peace, but the images that haunted me last night make my heart even heavier and as we pull into Atlanta, I’m desperate to see her, to make sure she’s okay.
