CHAPTER NINETEEN

After the meeting, Joseph, Nikki and Cam discussed the warnings to look at the ‘friends’ of the deceased.

‘Couldn’t that just be more misdirection?’ asked Cam suspiciously. ‘It’s very insistent, isn’t it? I mean, threatening various actions if we don’t comply with his wishes?’

‘He could be turning the spotlight away from the real killer, I suppose,’ said Nikki. ‘Or it’s important to him that we look in the right direction, and that’s at the goths.’

‘If it were a Burgess,’ Joseph said, ‘surely he’d try to direct us to the Leonards and vice versa? So who the hell is it? And does he have Mickey or not?’

Nikki heaved in a deep breath. ‘I have absolutely no idea why, but I don’t think he does. But I do think he knows who has. And I’m sure he knows Mickey too, from the way he spoke to Raymond. I think telling us one thing and Raymond another was a big mistake, and we should hang on to that. If he’s really cunning and I’ve got it totally wrong, I’ll throw up my hands, but if I’m right, then even if he is the killer, he’s capable of getting things wrong.’

Joseph sincerely hoped that was the case. It was how they caught people. One small mistake was often all it took.

‘Joseph, I didn’t want to overload everyone with info, but have you had any luck with looking at Derek Leonard’s business empire?’ Nikki asked.

‘Interesting, to say the least,’ he said. ‘To be honest, I’ve farmed most of it out to Spooky in IT. She can use routes that I have no access to and she’s working on it herself.’

Nikki looked pleased.

‘On the surface, he’s squeaky clean and he is actually a damned good businessman. All of his companies and his investments are in excellent shape. The only problem is he seems to have considerably more income than he ought.’

‘Illegal dealings, probably through Cousin Raymond,’ said Nikki. ‘They might not like each other but where money’s concerned, they’d not be averse to using each other.’

‘Most likely,’ Joseph said. ‘Anyway, if anyone can ferret out shady business deals, it will be Spooky.’

‘Nothing about his strange sex life come to light, I suppose?’ asked Nikki, with a hint of a smile.

Cam looked perplexed, so she explained briefly what Derek’s son had told them.

‘Actually, something did materialise when I was trawling through his expenditures. There was a regular payment to a private company that turns out to be a — get this — specialist escort agency.’ Joseph raised an eyebrow. ‘At some point, I’ll ring and see what their special of the day is, shall I?’

‘Just don’t get too interested!’ Nikki warned with a grin.

‘As if!’

Cam shook his head, laughed and stood up. ‘And on that note, I’d better go and collate some of this for the ACC’s visit. I’ll let you get on.’ At the door, he stopped and said, ‘Keep me up to date, won’t you? And whatever you need to help your search for Mickey, just ask.
