“You’re an idiot.”

Ryan wondered if Hudson would leave if he ignored him. Probably not. He didn’t usually care what Ryan thought or wanted. “I think you already told me that a few hundred times.”

Hudson pushed away from the office door and walked into the room. “I didn’t mean it those times. Well, mostly.”

“But you do now? What changed?”

“The fact that you are behaving like an idiot.”

Hudson sat in the chair in front Ryan and put his feet on the desk. Ryan scowled at him, but really, the office was Hudson’s territory, even though that was where Ryan had taken refuge when he’d left Avery in the kitchen. Ryan didn’t use the office, not enough to bother claiming the room.

“I suppose you’re going to enlighten me?”

“Damn right I am. I heard the way you talked to Avery.”

Ryan groaned. Of course he had, and now Ryan was going to have to sit through an intervention. At least only Hudson was there, although Ryan would have rather talked to Tristan and Lucas, or even Carter. Hell, he’d rather talk to Lilia even though he always felt awkward when the kid was around. He didn’t know how to behave with children.

“So, you’re an idiot,” Hudson said again.

“I heard you the first time. Will you leave me alone if I agree?”

“No. I’m going to explain why you’re an idiot.”

“Oh, goody,” someone said from the door.

Ryan hit his forehead against the desk. Xander, too? Ryan’s day was going from bad to worse, and fast.

Hudson pushed the empty chair on his side of the desk back, and Xander lowered himself into it. He was so big Ryan thought he was going to break it, but it held, although Xander looked like he was perched on it rather than sitting comfortably.

“What did he do this time?” Xander asked.

“He brought his mate home and hasn’t talked to him since then.”

Xander frowned. “Why?”

“Because he’s an idiot.”

“I already know that. I mean, why isn’t he talking to Avery?”

“Because he tried to keep Avery home from work and Avery told him to go fuck himself and that he wouldn’t let anyone else control him.”

“I think I’m missing something.”

He was, and Ryan was surprised he hadn’t reacted at the him. “Avery’s ex is after him,” he explained.

“Why?”

Ryan leaned over the desk. “Why aren’t you surprised that Avery’s a guy?”

Xander rolled his eyes. “Because I read his address, remember? I saw the picture on his ID, and it says he’s male.”

“And you didn’t think you needed to tell me that before I went to talk to him?”

“No. It was his secret to tell, not mine. Besides I knew things would be okay, since you’re gay.” He frowned. “Well, I thought things would be okay. What happened?”

“Avery moved to Gillham to escape his abusive ex. The guy found him, and he wants Avery to go back to Salt Lake City. I managed to convince Avery to move here so Kent wouldn’t know where he is, but that’s all Avery allowed me to do.
