Chapter 13

Thursday 17th September – Iona McTay

Iona cupped her hands around the mug of warm, milky chocolate, thoroughly enjoying its comforting taste and Lewis’ close attention. A warmth built in her belly that had little to do with the chocolate, but lots to do with his proximity and his concern. Not that she’d let on too easily. A girl had her methods, and playing it cool in the face of his anxiety was working well. She had him exactly where she wanted him and wasn’t about to lose her advantage.

“You sure you’re okay, love?” Lewis asked, a little lost puppy look on his handsome face.

Lord, she could just eat him up.

“For the one-hundredth time, Inspector Elliott, I’m all right. And stop calling me ‘love’. I’m Doctor McTay to you. And don’t you forget it.”

“Good God, Iona, how many times do I have to tell you, Ellie Strachan kissed me. I didn’t kiss her back, and you’ve got to know that. Damn it, girl, I’ve loved you since the first time I clapped eyes on you, and I … God, you could have been hurt tonight. When I think of that bastard with his hands all over you, I could tear his heart out.”

He knelt in front of her, hands on her knees and eyes brimming.

She took pity on him and covered his hands with hers.

“He didn’t hurt me, Lew,” she said quietly. “In fact, now I’ve had time to think on it, Kaine seemed genuinely upset. He actually apologised when he let me go, and he looked as though he meant it.”

“But he’s a killer. Think of all those people on that plane.”

Iona closed her eyes and tried to associate the man she’d known for a few hours as Peter Sidings with the actions attributed to Ryan Kaine. She found it difficult, but not impossible. During her psych rotation in med school, she’d been exposed to dozens of patients with sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies. Some she’d diagnosed easily, others had taken a little longer. It usually had something to do with the eyes, the way the patients looked at her. A slight disconnect between the words and the apparent human empathy.

Although he’d lied from the start, she understood why. Kaine hadn’t exhibited any of those pathological abnormalities in his actions or reactions. In a clinical setting, Iona would have sworn the man was well-balanced and normal. High-functioning and driven, even. She didn’t see him sitting on any of the DSM lists.

For Peter Sidings, or rather Ryan Kaine, to have fooled her so completely was not only frustrating, it was deeply disappointing.

Darn it, what had she missed? He’d seemed so genuine. Quietly spoken, he appeared focused only on the missing boy.

“A penny for them?”

Iona smiled. She could rely on Lewis to throw out a cliché when she needed to hear one.

“My thoughts are worth much more than that, Inspector.”

He lowered his head and kissed the back of her hand. She jerked it away and checked the kitchen, relieved they still had the place to themselves.
