Briar

I spend the next morning recounting my night with my mom and Andrew. My mom is totally freaked out about Cam, but Andrew reassures her that he’ll help bolster police activity in the area to keep an eye out. After a late breakfast, I tell them I’m headed to Jack’s house.

A few minutes later, I pull behind Jack’s BMW i3. I look down at the directions on my phone, squinting against the bright autumn sun as I compare the address on the school roster with the address on my phone. Is it a requirement that every person in Greythorn have luxury cars and pretentious houses? I lock the Subaru, walking up to the ornate front door and knocking. A couple of minutes and two knocks later, I’m just about to turn around when a woman opens the door, and I know instantly that she’s Jack’s mother.

“Hi,” I say, my voice uncertain. “I’m Briar. I’m here to see Jack?”

She gives me a warm smile. Beautiful—younger than I imagined, with porcelain skin and bright red hair, the exact shade of Jack’s.

“He’s actually with Scarlett,” she says, her voice throaty and low. “He should be home soon if you want to come inside.” Studying me, she tilts her head to the side. “You’re Andrew’s stepdaughter, right? I think he mentioned your name to me.” She must see my look of confusion because she continues. “I work as an attorney, and we recently updated some documents for the Academy,” she explains. “How are you finding Greythorn? I hope it’s not too soul-sucking,” she jokes.

I huff a laugh. “It’s fine.”

She seems nice, and I feel at ease. And it seems that she has Jack’s sense of humor.

“We must have you all over for dinner sometime—”

“Briar?”

I twist around, and Jack is standing there with Scarlett. They’re watching me with careful concern—they don’t know why I’m here.

“You’re welcome to come in with Jack if you want. I think I hear my phone ringing. So wonderful to meet you, Briar,” Jack’s mom says politely before turning and walking away.

I’m left with the two of them, and neither of them move.

“I was hoping we could talk,” I say quietly.

“Briar—”

“No,” I interrupt Scarlett, holding a hand out. “I really need to talk to you. There are things you don’t know about me, and—”

Jack pulls Scarlett past me. By the time I turn to face them, Jack has a hand on his front door, ready to slam in my face. “You made your choice, Briar. We get it. But it’s not like we can change your mind.”

He moves to shut the door, but just before it clicks shut, I call out— “I was raped!”

The door pauses.

“In California. He was my mom’s boyfriend at the time, and he… he raped me. There was a trial, and he was sentenced to thirteen years.”

The door slowly opens again, and they both watch me with crossed arms.

“None of them are like their reputations. They’re caring, compassionate, kind. That day in a quad? I said something about men raping women, remember? And they stopped.
