The following morning, I put on my Big Girl Panties and headed back to the hallowed halls of Evil Bitch Central otherwise known as Twin Falls Academy, trying to start fresh.
Iâd even meditated that morning to clear my headspace. (Okay, maybe it wasnât actually meditation in the traditional sense but Iâd said a few mantras while brushing my teeth, trying to get my head right, so I felt that counted for something.)
I stepped onto campus and headed for my locker. Down the hallway I saw Maddox and Quinton quietly but definitely arguing about something. As I got closer I couldâve sworn Iâd heard my name but when I approached, I caught the flash of a red, bound book before Quinton shoved it into his backpack.
I thought about asking them but I was already too close to being late for class and didnât want to risk it. Besides, Preston wasnât with them so I didnât feel brave enough to push the issue.
Quinton seemed to flush when our gazes met but he turned and headed for his own class. Maddox, on the other hand, gave me a lazy grin and waved as if he knew something I didnât. I really didnât like him. I frowned and ignored his wave, hustling a little faster to my class.
If I didnât quite understand Prestonâs angle, I definitely didnât understand Quinton or Maddox either. Quinton seemed really smart and Maddox seemed the dumb jock but they were tight friends. Opposites attract, I guess. Preston seemed square in the middle of those two. Preston was smart but not wicked smart like Quinton but he also played sports like Maddox.
Preston had a sensitivity to him that both Quinton and Maddox lacked though. Probably his artistic roots. Theyâd probably been friends since grammar school. Those bonds typically cement friendships even when change happens.
At least that was what Iâd seen in other people. My dad moved us around a lot. I jumped school districts all the time until I put my foot down my freshman year and begged him to stay in one spot until I graduated.
Heâd agreed but only because Iâd made a huge stink about it and Iâd never done that before. I think Iâd freaked him out a little. I was usually so accommodating to whatever whims he had â and trust me, he had quite a few â but I knew if I was going to get the grades I needed for a scholarship to go to Berkeley University, I had to stay in one spot for my four years of high school.
Look how well thatâd worked out. Way to go, Dad.
Unlike me, my dad hadnât been on the higher education bandwagon. Heâd been actively trying to convince me to agree to backpacking across Europe, staying in hostels and hitchhiking through the Great Beyond. Sorry Dad, that sounds like a giant NOPE sandwich served with a side of HELL NO.
Hitchhiking through Europe sounded like an excellent way to die.
Sometimes I thought my dad was stuck in a different era.
