Days Later: Lankā: The Inner Chamber of the King

Rāvan held up his hand, “Brother,” he said, his voice level and without fear, “do not tread this path, from which you might not return.”

Facing him stood Vidyujhiva, literally exploding with lightning. His very voice seemed to set their air sparking with electricity. The chamber of Rāvan was filled with the scent of ozone, heralding the arrival of the unnatural storm.

“The Dark knows only one path, my king,” Vidyujhiva said, his every word accented with electricity, “return was never an option.”

Rāvan stared at Vibhishan, who stood at the far end of the room, pinned to the walls by the crackling bolts of lightning that seemed to spit out wildly from the form of Vidyujhiva. He cursed himself for not foreseeing this. He should have known that a simple marital alliance would hardly rein in the passions of a true lord of the Dark world. He should have recognised the mad lightning in the eyes of his brother in law. He should have known better than to have allowed his assailant inside his innermost sanctum, where the Dark was at its strongest. And just as it strengthened him, so too it did empower his assassin, a scion of the lords of the Dark…

But he still worried more for Vibhishan, as his brother’s body convulsed horribly at the touch of Vidyujhiva’s lightning.

The Lightning, Rāvan thought, as he parried the maddened bolts that rained around him, there was something different about the lightning. The power of Vidyujhiva seemed augmented somehow, far more than even the presence of the Dark could cause. The bolts singed his skin like no other weapon had.

What manner of energy did this madman now wield?

“I can see the fear grow in your eyes, Rāvan,” Vidyujhiva snarled, “as the lightning burns the flesh of your bones, and you know you fear what you cannot fathom.”

The lightning erupted from his fingertips, “You will know more than fear today, Rāvan!” Vidyujhiva screamed, as the combined energy of his and Indra’s lightning exploded into Rāvan’s chest, sending him hurtling across the chamber. Even as his body hit the ground, the floor buckled under the impact of his fall, stone and rock parting easily as his flaming body was forced backwards. Finally, he came to rest amidst a pile of uprooted earth. He lay unmoving, the flesh on his chest completely burnt off, his entire body smoking with the still sparking power of his attacker.

Vidyujhiva stood watching the seemingly dead king, his own body still burning fiercely with the borrowed power. It seemed impossible, even with the plan thought through so completely. It seemed impossible that he had succeeded. But the truth lay dead before him.

He reined in the wild lightning, and the chamber seemed unusually quiet now. He turned towards Vibhishan who looked disbelievingly at the still body of his brother.

“It is over, Vibhishan,” Vidyujhiva said, letting out a deep breath, “do what you want with Lankā.”

“Over?” Vibhishan snarled, as he pulled himself to his feet, “it is not over until you pay for your sins.
