There but for the grace of God, go I.

The phrase was coined by my fellow Mancunian, a sixteenth-century Protestant reformer John Bradford who was imprisoned for his faith for many years in the Tower of London. Whenever he saw a criminal going to be hanged for his crimes, he would say, “There but for the grace of God goes John Bradford.”

Bradford himself was eventually burned at Smithfield. He had been shown in a dream the night before that this would happen. He kissed the wood beforehand, and the stake, before lifting his eyes to heaven, then told the man dying alongside him, “Be of good comfort, brother, for we shall have a merry supper with the Lord this night.” He knew the love that never fails – the grace of God really is amazing.

We who have failed and will fail again can kiss the cross because it is there we connect to perfection – by grace. Peter knew failure but he knew something greater. That while he was going under for at least the third time, a nail-pierced hand reached down so by grace he has been saved, he is being saved, and he will be saved forever.
