“Well, most people who are in love have sex,” I told her. That was one of the benefits of actually being in love, of course. When you loved someone, you got to fuck them when you liked. You got to have a partner to try new things with. You got to be yourself.

“We aren’t in love, though.”

“Other people don’t know that.”

“Are they going to like, monitor whether we have sex or not?”

“No.”

“Then does it matter what we decide?”

“I just want to know,” I told her. “We’re going to have a year together. We might want to make the most of it.”

“I don’t know about that,” she laughed, but it was a nervous sort of laugh: one designed to hide her true feelings.
