“You ain’t been drinking, have you?” Wayne asked retrieving the truck keys from a half full pegboard on the wall by a row of alcohol bottles.

“No, not yet, thought about it though.”

Wayne nodded, smiled, and handed him the keys. Hawk blew out a breath—he wasn’t drunk yet, just nicely buzzed. He probably could have driven home if he’d needed to, although it would be far from the smartest thing he’d ever done. He allowed Colt to guide him out of the bar, waving at Sean and Justin on their way out, and over to the pickup.

“I know you want me,” Colt said finally, as they pulled out of the parking lot.

“What gay man wouldn’t?” Hawk replied flippantly.

“Not the same thing. Tell me why you won’t fuck me. You defended me to Mike. More than that, you claimed me as yours,” Colt said turning briefly to face him. “Please, Hawk, tell me.”

“You’re my boss’ son,” Hawk said flatly.

“Not good enough,” Colt said firmly. “Hawk, please.”

“I’m not interested in one night stands or a quick fuck whenever you decide to visit. I want more, a real relationship. Think of it as all or nothing. I refuse to get involved with you only for one or both of us to be hurt,” Hawk answered finally. He could feel the buzz beginning to wear off and swore, rubbing the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger.

“What would let me into your bed and heart?”

“Leave it be, Colt.”

“No. I want to know my chances.”

“You’re moving, aren’t you? To New Orleans, I believe that is what your mother said.”

Colt nodded. “I haven’t heard anything definite yet, but that is where I want to work.”

“Enough said.”

They finished the drive in tense silence. Hawk waited until Colt was in the main house before turning to the bunkhouse. Stripping, he crawled into bed. He couldn’t understand why Colt hadn’t run from him. Colt had to know what Hawk was capable of.

Hawk let out a deep breath. He’d almost killed a man. What the hell kind of man did that make him?
