A splenectomy. He’d had his spleen removed. Professor Stern’s lecture, the one she’d just listened to in her lab, flashed to the front of her memory. It wasn’t the worst place he could have gotten injured. You could live without a spleen, but you could die from a rupture if you didn’t get medical attention quickly. If those students hadn’t found Arlo and called for help when they did, the injury could have easily been fatal.

She glanced at her phone. If she didn’t leave the house now, she was going to be late for class. But surely between the phone number and date of birth, she could track Arlo down.

Her phone pinged in her backpack the second she shut the front door behind her and started toward campus.

It was Curtis.

On for tonight?

Her heart swelled. As awful as she’d felt two days ago, she never could have guessed that she’d be walking to class in the sunshine with a smile on her lips right now. Yet here she was. She had a friend—maybe even a boyfriend—and dinner. And she was going to help Arlo.

See you at the library, she typed back.

“The library will be closing in one hour,” the robotic female voice announced.

Nya sighed and finished scanning her last reading.

Time to switch gears and find Arlo.

She spent the next thirty minutes Googling different combinations of Arlo’s name, birthday, and phone number with little luck so far. She had found a few things, though.

For one thing, 986 was an area code from Bingham County in Idaho. That was a surprise. While most of the state, including Clearwater, used the 208 area code, some counties apparently had unique codes.

Otherwise, the phone number was a dead end. She’d even tried calling it, unsure exactly what she’d say if he answered—and got a disconnected message right away. If this had been his phone number, it wasn’t anymore.

She found a record of Arlo in the Idaho Repository—the same place she’d found Sid. There wasn’t much information there either. Just what she already knew: That he was from Bingham County. No driving violations. However, there was an intriguing entry stating, Removal of Child.

She tried clicking on the entry for more information, but because the entry involved a minor, it was sealed. When she Googled the phrase, the article that popped up first in search made her stomach clench when she read the preview text.
