Chapter Nine
Within the next hour, Troian left to pick up Fray and Silas. He figured it would be easier to space out the amount of times he had to use Relocation. Barbara had volunteered to help, but Fray and Troian immediately vetoed that idea. I couldn’t blame her. I understood them not wanting her involved, but for Troian’s sake, I wished there was someone else there to help take the load.
So, while Silas and Fray were at the house, we ordered a pizza and sat around the living room. Jake and Damen got along fine with Silas and the other Stonehenge guardian. Troian was coming out of his shell around them, too. Mostly with Silas though. I urged Troian to talk to Fray more. From what he’d said, they’d been such good friends before. Troian was doing okay now. He was—well, used to be—an Elite Guardian. And maybe when we were done with this, we could change the rules so Troian could be a Stonehenge Ley Line Guardian like he always wanted. The more I thought about it, it was so stupid to have paranormals excluded from the task. Humans were just as bad. It wasn’t what you were that determined your worth, it was who you were on the inside. I’d always been a fan of some of the magical beings in Salem—like Albie—but I guessed it was just the prejudice from the past that made me automatically think that the ones I came across were bad. When that was all you hunted, it wasn’t a difficult conclusion to jump to. This time, though, the tables had changed, and we weren’t just going after a selkie, or pissed off fox shifter. This was a seriously fucked up human, and a leader on an epic power trip.
I kept tabs on Troian as we talked, looking for any signs that the Relocation had taken its toll on him. He seemed fine, always sharing flirty smiles with me and his attempts at inside jokes, even though I was sure everyone else was fully aware what was happening between the two of us. Fray beamed from the new information, most likely feeling as if Troian didn’t have a leg to stand on concerning him and Barbara anymore. Little did he know Troian had just adjusted the rules for us. That didn’t change what he felt about the relationship between Barbara and Fray. It was like how Damen wasn’t keen on Troian. Troian would just never like the idea of Fray with his sister. It was kind of funny when I thought about it, but I was never going to bring that up to him. He wouldn’t find the humor in it. Like, at all.
“So, you’re staying here?” Silas asked.
I nodded, my clear displeasure showing all over my face. “Salem needs me.”
Silas squinted at Troian, his lips pursing as he regarded him.
“Green Eyes,” Troian reminded him.
“Chester,” Damen mumbled.
After shooting Damen a look, I imagined it would be hard to say the fake name I’d given the fae when you were so used to calling him by his real name.
