That night my dad was home when I came in. He was trying to make dinner. Generally when we had a sit-down dinner I made it. I was a better cook, I was usually home earlier, it had become our habit.

But I hadn’t been around. All that weekend I’d been eating at Pedro’s. And when I was home I’d kept to myself. So I wasn’t surprised to see him there, with bread and eggs, volunteering to make French toast. The fact was, I’d been avoiding him, and he knew it.

He made dinner and we sat down and ate. I had so much on my mind. I hadn’t told him about the fight with Billy. I hadn’t told him about Margaret and her parents. I hadn’t said anything about the Metro Café tape. It was like I couldn’t let the dam break, like if I said one thing, then I’d have to say all of it, and then I’d end up crying or something ridiculous.

I didn’t look at him. I spread butter on my French toast. “How was your first day of school?” he asked.

“All right,” I said.

“I can’t believe you’re a junior already,” he said, shaking his head.

I nodded. I poured syrup.

“What classes are you taking?” he said. “If you don’t mind my asking.”

I shrugged. “Spanish. Math. The usual.” I cut a corner off my French toast and jammed it into my mouth.

“That’s funny you do so well at Spanish. I couldn’t do languages to save my life.”

I didn’t answer.

He ate. I ate. The doorbell rang.
