Chapter 6

When they stepped into the elevator, Avery pressed the button for the lobby and fought the urge to grasp her hand.

“No bike?”

“We’re walking. It’s just three blocks.” Avery wrapped his fingers around the cool steel railing.

“That sounds nice.”

“It’s a greasy spoon. I got hooked on their brand of cholesterol in grad school.” Avery located a convenient twenty-four hour diner soon after he closed on his condo. A big fan of breakfast for dinner, he was used to having it as a staple at any time of the day or night. Working on projects, he would often be up until all hours debugging software so it would work flawlessly. He became addicted to bacon, eggs, and waffles. He saw no reason to break the habit. Taking Sasha to somewhere on his turf was a bonus.

He smiled at the doorman who held the door for her.

“Where was that?”

“Massachusetts.”

“Let me guess. Harvard Business School.”

Avery actually snorted. He wouldn’t have lasted a day there. Poor fit, indeed.

“All right,” Sasha continued, obviously taking his response as a challenge. “You’re a company bigwig. Surely you went somewhere for smart people. Ivy League probably, but maybe not.”

“Do you want a hint?”

“Definitely not! I love guessing games.”

A tidbit of information about herself he would file away for future reference.

“You like the big city but aren’t used to it. That rules out Boston College. Man, there are a ton of smaller liberal arts schools there, but you strike me as a history major—or English or political science or psychology or—”

“I get the point. Nope. Keep going.”

“Science. I can see you in science. A scientific business here. You could be an important engineer with an airplane manufacturer, but they employ tons of engineers, so that wouldn’t explain the insurance.”

“Here we are.” He opened the door for her as they entered the restaurant. She might or might not appreciate gentlemanly manners, but he wouldn’t let that dictate his behavior.

The waitress looked up from the Formica table she was wiping down. “Two today, Avery?”

“Please.”

“Coming right up. Follow me.”

She led them to green vinyl seats in the back corner of the restaurant.

When they were alone, Sasha gave the place and the menu a slow, thorough evaluation before pronouncing judgment. “I like it.” She nodded.

“Good, because we’re eating here whether you approve or not.” He intentionally baited her, hoping to lower her defenses by raising her ire.

Their waitress showed up with coffee and a notepad before she could respond and took their orders.

Sasha straightened her shoulders. “I’m going to let that slide, but only because I want to eat here, too. Now, where were we with your education?”

“You had just determined I’m not an aerospace engineer.”

“Right. So, what does that leave? About a zillion options. Let me think on it some more.”

Her cup of coffee landed in front of her, and she immediately poured cream in it until the liquid threatened to overflow the rim. Meanwhile, he had finished a third of his.

“How do you do that?” he asked as she leaned down to carefully sip off half an inch of the mixture before lifting the cup.
