With warm macaroni and cheese, and manicotti take out in my hands, I walk to her office building. Iâm nervous as fuck; stomachâs in knots and my hands are clammy. Thatâs how much I care about her. I go to the mezzanine where the cafeteria is, and I search through the crowd.
There.
Stepping out of the elevator, her long brown, curly hair almost reaches her waist, her natural tanned skin as I remember. My eyes appreciatively comb over every part of her body, she hasnât changed. Has she?
Involuntarily, I shiver at the sight of her, as I try to get my head together. I want her to see me so bad because I donât have the will to move. Iâm so damn weak. Maybe I should be channeling Dawson and his courage.
She navigates her way through the throngs of people. Walking toward me, I know she is only momentâs breath from seeing me. I count the seconds in my head. One, two, three, four⦠and then it happens. She stops walking altogether.
âRiver?â She says loud enough for me to hear.
âKhloe.â
She doesnât look happy. Fuck. âWhat are you doing here? How did you find out where I work?â
She moves her large purse from her side to her front and steps back. âThanks, but I canât do this now, River.â
Iâm frustrated and hurt. What the fuckâs it going to take? âTake the food, Khloe. I got it for you and Iâll go.â I walk up to her, handing her the bags of takeout.
As she reaches for them, her purse swings back to her side, and I see the secret sheâs been keeping from me, with my own eyes.
Below her breast, in her loose-fitting dress, a small bump appeared. My eyes flick back to hers. âYouâre pregnant.â
âGood to see you still have your eyesight,â she quips sarcastically. âI said I canât do this while Iâm at work. Please go.â
âYouâre with someone?â The thought of her in a relationship with someone kills me. Khloe never said anything about a man. Not recently. Over two years ago, she told me about a man she was seeing, but why not saying anything now? Sheâs become a real goddamn mystery.
âRiver go.â
âTake-off the rest of the day, we need to talk.â
She shakes her head, in disagreement. âNo, but you can pick me up at eight.â
âAt 8 pm? Youâre pregnant, Khloe, why work so late when you need to rest?â
âWhere do you get off showing up all-of-a-sudden and thinking you have any say in how I run my life? My life isnât a fairy tale and the sooner you get that through your head, the better off youâll be⦠the better weâll get along.â Her words show her strength, but her voice is weak.
Once again, I can see the difference between our lives. If my lady were pregnant, sheâd be spoiled, and have the option of not working this late, hell⦠or at all. Not a chance. I would ever let my woman or wife work so late or at all when pregnant.
