This notion of ‘furious peace’ perhaps summarises the entire film as Kitano creates an exposition of sadness, violence and anger amidst an often beautiful, funny and musing on the nature of life and death. The vibrant and dynamic figure of Kitano himself infuses the whole work and renders Hana-bi one of the most representative works of his filmmaking career to date.
