Over dinner at the hotel I asked her, âIs this a Cinderella kind of thing?â
âA Cinderella kind of thing?â
âNow you are this version of you. But on Monday are you going to turn into a pumpkin and start calling me Mr. Bauer again?â
She methodically removed a prawn from its shell with her fingers before answering. Then she smiled and said, âI donât think so.â She popped the prawn in her mouth and frowned as she chewed. âBut youâre a worrying man, Harry. You donât exactly inspire a feeling of security and stability.â
âIs that important?â
She was still frowning as she peeled another prawn. âYeah, I think it is. You shouldnât make me feel like Iâm some kind of safe, boring, stay-at-homeâ¦â
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âWell, what did you mean? We all want some degree of predictability, donât we? Thatâs why you asked if I was going to be Cinderella.â
I hesitated a moment before answering.
âIâm going to have to go down to San Diego at some point.â
She sighed and sagged back in her chair, wiping her fingers on her napkin.
âYou asked me to spend the weekend with you, and now that Iâm here you spring this on me?â
âI didnât say I was going this weekend.â
âOh.â After a moment she nodded. âSo this is about you inspiring a nice, cozy sense of security?â
I sipped my wine, watching her. âI was thinking of going Monday. When I return that will be it.â
âIf you return.â She shook her head and closed her eyes. âHarry, what do you hope to achieve?â
âStop. After San Diego, if you still want to know me, Iâll find a shrink, Iâll get help, whatever it is I have to do. But first I have to go to San Diego.â
She closed her eyes again. âThat is code for something so ugly.â
I nodded. âIâm sorry.â
âIs there nothing I can do, Harry, to change your mind?â
âNo.â
She stared unhappily at her remaining prawns.
âWhat will you do? How does that work? Youâll book a hotel? How long will you be there?â
âI donât know. I guess Iâll book a room at a hotel. Iâll stay there two or three daysâ¦â I trailed off. âWhy?â
âI donât know, morbid curiosity I suppose. I want to think of you doing something normal, healthy, positive. I want to think of you rebuilding your life.â I waited, watching her face. She said, âWhere will you stay?â
âA hotel.â
âI know, you said that, but which one?â I frowned, then laughed. âDonât laugh at me, Harry.â
I spread my hands. âI donât know. The Hilton, I guess. The Bayside Hilton. Why do you want to know?â
âI wish you wouldnât go. Iâm going to pray for you.â
âReally?â
âI know you probably donât believe in that kind of thing. But my mother was a Catholic, and my grandmother before her. And I am a Catholic too. I know that Jesus is going to look after you if I ask him to. I am going to pray to Jesus and the Mother Mary, to help you walk away from this thing you want to do.
