Chapter 2

Niall was glad she wanted to see his true form. His stallion neighed in approval.

He shifted beneath the light of the moon, his legs elongating as his hands and feet became hooves. Years of experiencing the shift had taught him how to deal with the pain, but under the pale moonlight it was merely uncomfortable. He focused on Felicity instead, to take his mind off it. She’d have to accept him if there was any hope she’d be his mate or live with his clan. If she couldn’t wrap her head around it, then she’d never gain the clan’s acceptance, and they wouldn’t welcome their mating at the sacred ceremony.

But he was getting way ahead of himself. Felicity didn’t want to discuss mating. He’d respect her wishes for now—working together was a good start. The fact that she hadn’t outright rejected him or told him she’d write the story on her blog anyway had given him confidence that he could regain her trust.

He groaned softly as his body expanded and fully took on his stallion form. The fine spattering of hair along his arms turned into a sleek black coat that spread around him until his hair shot out into a long mane and tail. He sensed Felicity’s apprehension, and could hear her heart beating even through the walls of the stone cottage. He knew she was trying desperately to compose herself. It was only natural that she’d be nervous. Even with her experience with the supernatural, he imagined this was more than she’d bargained for when she’d taken on the investigation. Niall waited patiently for her to come outside. Her pulse had returned to a more steady rhythm, but when the door to the cottage opened and she stepped out, it picked back up again. She started down the stone path with tentative steps. Good, she’d remembered the backpack—it was secured behind her.

“Heaven help me. I should pinch myself,” she whispered. But she continued to walk slowly down the pathway toward the gate.

Niall stood on the other side, revealing his stallion. -It’s okay, Felicity. If we’re going to work together, then you need to know me. All of me.- He could see her swallow visibly.

“Remind me again why I’m doing this.”

-Because the supernatural interests you. You said so yourself. I fascinate you, and you can’t help yourself, love.-

Her eyes widened infinitesimally. She shook her head and gave a nervous laugh. “I suppose curiosity has always been my downfall,” she muttered. “Let’s get this over with, but stop calling me ‘love’. I’m not your love. I’m not your mate. Do you bloody well understand what I’m saying?”

Niall ignored her and lowered himself to the ground so she could mount him. -Come on then. Since you want this over with.-

“No, thanks. I think I’ll walk.”

-It’s faster this way.-

Niall wanted her to accept him, and the sooner she got used to his stallion the better. Not to mention the sensuality of riding a púca might help her get over any lingering fear or anxiety she might have.
