We’re silent the entire way back to the inn. Neither of us has said a word since I asked, quietly, if Jude wanted to come back with me and he just nodded. Yes. I think we both know being alone isn’t an option. The fervent glint in Jude’s eyes confirms we share the same fear: that if we say good night now, we’ll snap the delicate new thread that’s holding us together.

We maintain careful distance on our walk. Our hands never even brush. But every nerve ending in my body is vibrating at a single frequency. It’s identical to the one coming off Jude in waves.

By the time we reach the hall leading to my room, awareness is pulsing between us like a living, breathing thing. It electrifies my skin, making my hair stand on end and the pulse between my thighs pound.

I’m still mindless, but not with jealousy. It’s Jude’s proximity that makes me feel drugged. Succumbing to his words, his touch, his passionate persuasion — it feels inevitable now. Maybe that’s why I tried to hide from him. Tried to stop myself from succumbing to the power he’s always wielded over me. But as I slip the key into the lock and Jude’s breath blankets the back of my neck, I pray the spell holds. At least for the night. At least long enough for us to see if this new connection will last.

He follows me into the room, an immovable wall of heat and strength behind me as I flick on the first light switch I find. An antique table lamp flickers to life. The four-poster bed casts a shadow against the wall.

“Eden.” Jude’s whisper warms my neck. He sweeps my hair over my shoulder, exposing my nape. I don’t try to answer, not when his lips are dancing up the top of my spine. He lights me up with that simple caress, my nipples straining against my bra and my panties going slick with need. That need ratchets even higher when he says, “I want you. I want to see you. All of you.”

I rest my head on his shoulder, exposing my neck, myself.

“Don’t move.” His growl melts my knees, making it impossible to move even if I wanted to. Which I don’t. Not even a little.

Jude coasts his palms over my hips, across my stomach. Lifting, higher, until he cups my breasts through my shirt. I can feel his eyes on my face, watching the way my lips part as he traces both slopes till he finds the beaded tips and circles, teasing.

My tongue darts out, wetting my lower lip. “Are you going to play with me? Or strip me?”

Jude’s answering chuckle turns into a groan when I press against him, rubbing my ass against his prominent erection. “If you’re lucky, both.”

I’m about to say something provocative, something to urge him on, when Jude coasts his teeth up my neck and bites. It’s sharp and surprising, and short-circuits my ability to speak. I sink against him, his broad chest easily supporting my weight.
