Chapter Eleven

I told myself I would sleep in a little late on Thanksgiving morning, but knowing Misty was waiting for her breakfast, I pulled some sweatpants on over my nightgown, shoved my feet into my tall rubber boots and grabbed my heavy coat off the hooks by the door.

I thought she might be waiting for me with a big neigh, but she stood by the neighbors’ side of the fence with her head over it, having a conversation with Caleb—or so it appeared. There was a lot of blowing and snorting. I even showed her the apple. That usually did the trick when I wanted her attention, but not this time.

“Okay, suit yourself. And I was going to give you a treat this morning, because its Thanksgiving,” I told her as I walked to the barn. But she stayed by the fence as I put a flake of hay in the manger and grain in a rubber dish. I checked the water trough as I walked back to the house to make sure the floating heater was working, and used that opportunity to scoop some debris out of the water.

I decided not to go back to bed, but didn’t get dressed either. Instead, I picked up a new paperback bestseller I hadn’t had time to read, and plopped down on the sofa. I stopped to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for awhile, and then went back to my book. The weather pretty much suited my mood—it rained most of the day.

When it came time for my dinner, I headed to the refrigerator, pulled the frozen meal out of the freezer, and switched on the stove to preheat it. But when I opened the box, I stopped and looked at the picture of turkey, gravy, potatoes and cranberries, and suddenly my brain told my stomach, “no.” I turned the oven off again, put the frozen dinner back in the freezer, and pulled a box of popcorn out of the cupboard instead.

As I waited for the bag of corn kernels to pop, I glanced out the kitchen window to the pasture. Misty still stood by the neighbors’ fence, though Caleb was no longer there. Maybe she was bored. The microwave dinged and I pulled the bag out, then walked back to the window to watch Misty as I ate. She kept turning her head around and biting at her side. It wasn’t warm or sunny, so I didn’t think flies would be bothering her. I decided I’d better get dressed and go out to check.

By the time I was dressed for the cold, rain and mud, and looked out the window once again, Misty was no longer standing. She lay on the ground, rolling from side to side. I raced out the door, down the stairs and across the yard to the pasture gate. I knew that horses rolled. It was like taking a bath for them. But something wasn’t right, and I didn’t know what to do.

I turned around and ran back to the house, where I grabbed my cell phone.
