"I'm sorry, I know you don't like to get in the bathtub, but your body needs to be clean. It is not negotiable, sweetie." I listened from the front room as Dean spoke kindly but firmly to the little guy as he fought to get him into the tub. John hadn't spoken to us again, even after a week in human form. He still ate like a prisoner freshly out of solitary, but at least we knew now to stop him before he threw up. The little guy was a dream, except when it came to bath time. For whatever reason, he simply did not like to take baths. Dean had assured me this was common for his age, but I couldn't help but worry that maybe it had something to do with the trauma he'd endured.
Even though the boy was still nonverbal, the one “sowwy” having been an exception, he did whimper and cry out on occasion. When I heard him growling and something bang in the bathroom, I rushed in to see what was going on. John had managed to kick the towel rod completely off the wall and Dean was struggling to get him into the tub while the boy kicked and reached for anything possible to keep from being forced into the water.
"Stop that, little one. Uncle Dean is trying to take care of you," I spoke firmly, injecting a bit of alpha persuasion into my voice. The boy went limp, his head falling back against Dean's chest. "That's better, now let's see about that bath."
"I'm afraid it's not going to be that simple." Dean sighed as he gazed closely at John’s head, then resolutely held him out at arm’s length. "Sam, on top of the refrigerator you'll see a black case with an electric razor for shaving heads. I don't know how I missed it or where he would have picked it up if he didn’t arrive this way, but there are live bugs crawling through his hair."
My nose scrunched as I backed toward the bathroom door, trying to hide my horror. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?"
Dean nodded miserably. "I'm afraid we’re dealing with a lice infestation. Unless you want to shampoo and comb your hair for nits, I'd suggest that we just shave all three of our heads and wash all the bedding."
I spun on my heel heading for the kitchen, calling back over my shoulder as I rushed out of the room. "I vote for option B. The hair will grow back before beanie season is over and we have plenty of knit caps to hide our bald heads in the meantime." God, just the thought of that awful smelling shampoo and the laborious process of combing bug eggs from my hair was enough to make me want to whimper like a pup.
Two hours later, we tucked our freshly sheared little guy into his newly sanitized bed. I didn't want to think about the whole head shaving ordeal anymore. Suffice it to say that John hadn't reacted well.
