Chapter Eleven

After filing for the marriage license and picking up her truck, Catherine returned to Elaine’s farm and thought about her life, wedding, Josef, work, Josef, marriage, Josef, work. And not necessarily in that order. As she fed the kittens, the decision was made. Time to pack up and stay at Josef’s.

She drove across the dirt road and up his driveway. Blondie ran to her, tail wagging and barked in acknowledgment. “Hey, girl.” She rubbed the Lab’s back. “Where’s Josef?”

“Rrr-ruff,” Blondie responded.

“Oh, really. Let’s go get him.” Blondie darted from her side to the large shed where she barked and danced in and out of the open doors.

Loud rock music poured through the opening as she approached. There sat Josef in a large green machine. What the hell was it? I don’t recall Uncle Gordy ever having something like that.

Blondie barked. Catherine jolted back to attention and walked beside a hulk of a tire and the edge of an attached ladder. “Josef,” she yelled.

He jerked his head around. “Cat,” he hollered in surprise, “just a second.” The music stopped, and he climbed down the steps.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” she said as he hopped down. “What is this thing?”

“You’re not interrupting. To put it simply, this is a combine.”

The dirty overalls couldn’t hide his muscular legs.

“It’s huge.”

“What brings ya by? And I know it isn’t to learn about farm equipment.”

“I’ve decided to stay here. Where do you want me to chain up the dogs?”

His hands slid into pockets. “Good. Put the dogs where you’d like. Blondie can go wherever.” Josef looked to his wrist.

Cat laughed. “What are you looking at?”

“What time is it?”

She checked her watch. “Almost five-thirty.”

“How about dinner? Let me get in the shower, then I’ll get cooking.”

“Can I do anything to help?”

“When ya get the dogs and your belongings taken care of, if you want to see about starting up a vegetable and some baked beans, that would help.”

“Okay.” Catherine left the barn and returned to the truck for the dogs. She strolled around the yard and staked the chains in various locations so the dogs wouldn’t get tangled together yet could play with Blondie.

Unpacking in the white and pink chic room, she thought about life back in the cities. She had to notify her boss she was leaving, deal with selling the townhouse and her belongings and then, of course, take care of the horses.

“Ya all settled in?”

Startled, she jumped at the sound of his deep voice. “Yeah, thanks.”

He wore black cargo shorts and a tee shirt, which clung to his chest. His hair was still damp from his shower. He approached and pulled her near. Their bodies caressed. Her heart picked up a beat. Spices inundated her senses. For a moment, she paused to look at his oval face and full lips. Full-moist-kissable-lips.

His mouth connected with hers. When her legs bent, his large warm hand slid to her lower back, and he held her tight against his chest. His tongue probed. Her hand skimmed his arm to the wet hair where her fingers mingled and played.
