CHAPTER 24

The room went silent when Daniel walked into the lounge with Mark and he regarded them awkwardly. Beth was hanging out washing in the garden.

‘Sit down,’ smiled Cara, patting the space beside her on the couch.

‘Thanks,’ he replied, taking the proffered seat.

‘Did they give you the third degree?’

‘They were fair, I have to give them that. I think I gave them a lot to discuss.’

‘It’ll all work out,’ said Josh. ‘Don’t worry. They’re all bloody clever.’

‘So I’ve heard. And you really don’t work in the business?’

‘Nope. None of us do, except Cara. She’s done a bit of enforcing.’

‘You have?’ he said, smiling at Cara. This woman just got better and better.

‘Me and my trusty knuckle dusters,’ she grinned back at him.

‘I remember them well. The wolf imprint they left behind has only just gone from my wrist.’

Alfie and Josh smiled when Daniel and Cara continued to stare at each other.

‘I thought you were in on the business when you burst into Martina’s Bar?’ said Daniel, looking back at Josh.

‘Nah, we snuck back,’ he replied. ‘The family was royally pissed off at us for that. They wanted to send us away but, as usual, Cara got her own way.’

‘So none of you were trained to use guns or kill people?’ he said as though the concept were strange to him.

‘Nope. Mum trained us to fight but only so we can defend ourselves. She thought it wise the number of times our family’s been attacked. She taught Ethan too, he’s shit hot by the way.’

‘So are you. I’ve never seen anyone stand up to Alex like that before.’

‘Cheers,’ smiled Josh, pleased.

‘He was impressed with you. He said you were the challenge he’s always wanted.’

‘I can’t decide if that’s creepy or not.’

‘You’re all Maguires and you can’t use guns?’ said Daniel, still puzzled by the concept.

‘I can now,’ said Cara.

‘Yeah but you couldn’t before.’ He looked to the others. ‘She tried to shoot me in the chest with my own gun, but she couldn’t work it.’

‘You did what?’ exclaimed Alfie, looking to Cara.

‘I knew he was wearing a bullet proof vest,’ she retorted. ‘And anyway, I can work one now.’

‘Really well too,’ said Daniel.

As Cara gazed into his eyes, she recalled her first kill and her smile faltered.

‘You okay?’ he asked her with concern.

‘Yeah, just bad memories.’

‘Your first is always the hardest,’ he replied, knowing exactly what she was thinking. ‘It sticks with you.’

‘I don’t want that,’ she said, staring back at him with huge blue eyes.

‘I wish I could take it from you,’ he said gently.

Just when the others were starting to feel like they were intruding, Mark said, ‘Wait till you get to my age, then you’ll remember sod all.’

His quip broke the tension and they all smiled.

‘I’m always going into rooms and forgetting why I’m there,’ he added.

‘I do that now,’ said Alfie.

‘So do none of you want to work in your family’s business?’ Daniel asked them.

‘God no,’ said Alfie. ‘I’m an architect.’

‘And I want to open my own dojo’ said Josh.
