Chapter Fourteen

“Give us a smile.”

Danny grinned straight at Shane who snapped two pictures with his phone while trying hard to keep his emotions in check. What was it about putting a child in a school uniform for the first time that made it herald the beginning of the end of their childhood?

“Take a photo of my backpack and lunch box too,” Danny demanded and Shane smiled as he followed the order. The boy was so very proud of his Spiderman accessories. Combined with his excitement about going to school for the first time, his enthusiasm was contagious and under any other circumstances today would have been one of those that created memories to cherish for life. Shane didn’t know what it would be like for the boy in the long term but he knew he’d always remember this day for what didn’t happen, for who wasn’t there more than for the momentous occasion it was.

“Is it time yet?” Danny was all but jumping up and down and raring to go.

“Almost. We’ll go as soon as your granny knocks on the door.” Shane checked the time. “Any minute now. Are you sure you have everything?”

It was, of course, a nonsensical question. Shane had triple-checked both Danny’s bag and his lunch box, making sure he had his pencil case, books, copies and snacks.

He’d visited the school yesterday to talk to the headmistress and the very young-looking man who would be Danny’s teacher for his first year in school. He’d explained the boy’s circumstances to them and asked for patience and understanding in case he played up. The meeting had somewhat reassured him but he still worried they were moving too fast. Maybe it would be better to keep Danny at home for a few more days. Only a week had passed since the funeral. It was one thing for Shane to have to go back to work—he was an adult and supposed to be in control of his emotions, even if he wasn’t convinced about the truth in that assertion these days. Danny, on the other hand, kept on forgetting his mother wasn’t coming back and Shane could only hope his educators would deal with that in an appropriate and understanding way.

A short knock on the front window shook Shane out of his doubts and worries as Danny ran to the door, opened it and jumped straight into his granny’s arms.

“Are you ready, pet?” His mother’s voice sounded steady and to a casual observer she’d appear calm and relaxed, but Shane knew better. He saw the circles under her eyes, the twitch in her eye and the tension in her body. Thankfully Danny was oblivious, too caught up in his excitement to pick up on the emotional vibes surrounding him.

“Yes! Are we going now?” The boy couldn’t stand still as he shifted his gaze from Shane to his granny and back again, his impatience to get going all too clear.

“Let’s go.” Shane closed and locked the front door before leaning in to his mother and kissing her cheek.
