Chapter Sixteen

While they waited for the car service, Elly finally fell prey to her sleepless night and dozed. Ryan returned to the backseat. Jenna retreated to a crossword puzzle but was conscious of his every movement behind her.

Throughout the trip, she’d become more and more aware of his presence. He was very patient. Very solid. Very gorgeous. Very difficult to ignore.

He shifted, bumped his knee, and cursed under his breath.

“Why in the hell didn’t you have arthroscopic surgery on your ACL like most athletes?” Jenna asked.

She’d wanted to ask the question before, but she hadn’t wanted him to think she cared enough to be curious about him or his surgery. But he’d grown on her in the last few days, and she hated to see anyone in the kind of pain he’d been enduring, stiff upper lip or not.

“I’m a freaking medical marvel.” He shifted his eyes to Elly to check on her. “I had all the laser surgeries medical science has to offer, and now I’ve moved on to another more invasive kind. The kind that doesn’t heal as quickly. The kind you don’t recover from. Not if you’re a football player.”

“Do you miss it?” Dumb question. Of course, he missed it. Football was his life. She’d known Abby long enough to know that. Or had they all just assumed football was his passion?

“You could say.” His voice sounded bored as he tried to make light of it.

“But you still work in and around sports,” Jenna observed. “It seemed like you moved seamlessly from the football field into the broadcasting booth. Your degree is in broadcast journalism, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but I never intended to be a sports announcer.”

“Why do it then? As you told your agent, you don’t need the money.”

He shrugged his broad shoulders. “I’m twenty-nine. I have to do something to fill up my day. Drinking, gambling, using recreational drugs, and screwing a chorus line of wild women only take up so much time, you know.”

Ignoring the comment about his reputed lifestyle, she pressed on. “You’re a commentator for ESPN and you only do it to keep busy? Don’t you know how many guys would kill for that job?”

“I do know. Every sports fan and his brother think because they know every statistic about their favorite teams they could do what I do.” He paused and added, “They probably could. That’s why I’m thinking of getting out of it and letting someone else have the job.”

Men. They were never happy with what they had. “What would you do instead?”

“I have no idea.”

So typical. “None?”

“None,” he confirmed.

“You could take an active role at Eastham’s, couldn’t you?”

“Megan’s got that covered, and I want to do something more meaningful.”

“Meaningful? You? Who would have guessed?”

“Tell me about it.” He picked up a football from the floorboard and tossed it from hand to hand.

“Meaningful, how?”

“Let me repeat.” He spun the football on the tip of his finger. “I have no idea.”
