After weeks racing through the county, Abram was almost sure they’d never find him on this sweep. More dead ends. They were close to their lands when they got the first scent of Carron. Two days had passed as they trailed Carron, following him into a densely forested area.

“Dmitri and Barron are close,” Gideon whispered, scenting the air. “And two others besides them and Carron.”

“Grand Central Station,” Abram whispered back. He scented the air as well and knew it was another bear… and… a human?

“What would a human be doing out there?” Gideon asked.

Abram shrugged. “If it’s a poacher, he’s going to regret it.”

They’d had to chase poachers off their own property a time or two. It was a special breed of human who liked too much beer, too many guns, and animal heads on their walls. A special breed of human that Abram hated. Hunters who fed their families, who weren’t out for trophies, he could stomach them.

As long as they stayed out of shifter country.

Abram lowered on his haunches and saw the tracks they’d been following moving on ahead. He lifted his nose to scent the air again.

The other bear, the unknown… he smelled… different.

A flash of lightning cracked through the air. “Winter thunder. Just what we need,” Abram said. Maybe the electricity in the skies was throwing his nose off, but he didn’t think that was the case. “A bad blizzard is on the way, I fear.”

The winds whipped up, as if to tell Abram he was right.

“Hopefully Carron hasn’t scented us,” Gideon said.

“We’re upwind. I can’t say the same for the others,” Abram answered.

“Do you smell that, Gideon?”

Gideon frowned at Abram. “What?”

“The other bear… I’ve never scented it before.”

Gideon lifted his nose to the air. “Sweet. And spicy… it’s odd.”

A tension rose in Abram. He had to find this bear. Whoever he was, Abram needed to find him.

Now.

They carefully picked their way through the trees, growing closer to their prey. Abram could smell Carron’s scent growing stronger. If the other bears were on the other side of him, they could be driving the asshole in their direction.

A smile formed over Abram’s face at the thought.

On they moved, as silent as they could be. All the scents grew stronger, but specifically Carron’s.

A bear raced through the trees directly before them and they shifted, showing themselves to Carron.

Carron returned to human form as quickly as they sprouted fur and claws. He lifted his hands to them in mock surrender.

Abram took one lumbering step closer, ready to end it all right now.

“Wait!” Carron cried, looking terrified. The fear ebbed, and he attempted to get control of himself.

“I created you. Killers in every respect. You have me to thank for that.”

Gideon shifted into human form. “Thank you? Are you mad?”

“The world is changing,” Carron said. “Now that Gregor is gone, Declan has been named alpha. Declan… the male who murdered my son…” Carron’s face contorted with rage. “Males like you have no place in the world Declan foresees.
