CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I saw them walking through the jostling crowd. Everyone was losing their heads over my announcement. I couldn’t be certain, but I was pretty sure I was the first person to ever make a non-council-approved speech in The City of Hope.

I kept my eyes on Natasha and Nathan as they pushed through the churn of people. Then I left my vantage point so I could meet them in the alley.

I hadn’t seen Nathan since the day that I’d handed him over to the guards. I’d been picturing his body battered and bruised, but he didn’t look nearly as bad, as I'd been expecting. He looked delicious, in fact.

“Nathan,” I said gingerly, as I stepped forward. I wanted to throw my arms around him. I wanted to feel his lips against mine again, because my brain had been so convinced that I never would. But I had no idea how he felt about me. I had no idea if he would still say what he had said the day he’d been taken.

“You look rough,” he said, as he stepped forward with a weary smile on his face. I felt his arms wrap around my body, and for a moment I let myself fall into his embrace.

But I pulled away from the embrace long before I wanted to. “Has Natasha told you the plan?” I asked, because we couldn’t waste any more time with pleasantries. We had to get out of the city as quickly as possible, before it became overrun with guards.

“Actually, I need to make a small change to the plan,” Nathan said with a sheepish look. “There’s a girl who was meant to be putting me to death today. It was basically like her punishment for being around, when I helped you two back in the forest.”

“That was you?” I asked, as I thought back to two guards who’d fallen dead when their chips had been fried.

“Who else do you think would have done it?” Nathan asked me in surprise. I shrugged. I hadn’t really put any thought into who had done it. I’d been busy trying to break Nathan out of the city.

“Anyway,” he said, as he brought the conversation back to where it needed to be. “She got dragged off by guards at the field. I think the council is going to kill her in my place, and I can’t let that happen.”

“So, what do you suggest?” I asked him with a dubious look, because I didn’t like the way his little speech was going.

“We need to go back and help her. She can’t die because of me. It isn’t fair.”

“Are you kidding? We can’t go back now. We need to get out.” I wanted to tell him that I couldn’t risk losing him again. I wanted to tell him that all I wanted was for his safety to be assured.

But I didn’t. I just kept my gaze firmly on his, so that he knew I wasn’t convinced with his plan.

“Sarah, we need to help this girl,” Natasha said.
