Kelly Stone felt as if he was caught in some crazy dream.
He left Rita's apartment last night with blue balls, coming away with a friendly hug for his suffering. She was one of the sexiest women he ever met, and her Southern belle demeanor was absolutely mesmerizing. There was something about her that set her apart from the dozens of women in Washington DC he had bedded. It had nothing to do with position, background or education, most of his conquests outdoing Rita by far. It was just the way she handled herself, who she was. It made him realize that she found her way onto a pedestal in his heart that he was damned as to how he would remove her from.
It made him wonder how Hoyt Wexford had made his way with Sabrina Brooks. She was the same kind of woman in a different way. It almost made him want to ask Hoyt for advice. Only he would lie in horseshit and wallow in it before he admitted a need for coaching from that flatfooted mick bastard.
When he arrived at the AIG building in downtown Manhattan, he enjoyed the process of being confronted by the security guard and the look on his face when shown the Homeland Security creds. He was directed to the second floor where he located the office of one Edouard Colander.
Colander looked like a middle-aged, overweight Alfalfa from the Little Rascals comedies. All he was missing was the stalk of hair sticking up from his well-oiled coiffure. They shook hands and Kelly took a seat in front of the man's desk in his glass-walled office.
âI'll come to the point,â Kelly crossed his leg. âThere's an insurance claim over at the Brooks Chemical Company that seems to be under some scrutiny.â
âAh, yes,â Colander nodded gravely. âI'm somewhat surprised that Homeland Security would be concerned on this end of the investigative process.â
âWell, there seems to be some concern as to the cause of negligence,â Kelly stared at him. âI've been informed that AIG is contending that Miss Brooks had somehow provoked the terror attack and was culpable in inviting the damage.â
âI suppose that if you put it like that,â Colander spread his hands. âOur claims adjusters agree that it seemed rather odd that a specialized team of underworld saboteurs would have targeted her Company for no reason. Considering her ties to Hoyt Wexford, who is well known to have a history with the Nightcrawlerâ¦we cannot help but think that she made her place of business an attractive nuisance. Plus the fact that the vigilante has been known to use chemical weapons in his campaigns against the underworld. There is just too much for us to overlook.â
âThen you can appreciate the fact that the BCC's contribution to our efforts in defending this country is a bit much for us to overlook,â Kelly said pointedly. âThere was their research in finding a cure for the Ebola virus, plus the work in the AIDS campaign. Not to
