THE meeting with Matsumara went very well the next day. Brad was introduced to the rest of the roster, and he found it was a mixture of gaijins as well as the permanent Japanese crew. Instead of the PCW mentality that smaller men like Brad were set in matches to be crushed by bigger men like Bruiser, ATW tended to focus more on the storytelling of a match. Brad discovered that his first feud was with a Japanese wrestler named Haruki.
As they sat down with a translator to plan their first match, Brad felt a sense of relief that the goal of their matches would be wowing the crowd with acrobatic moves. Brad would be the face half of the feud and Haruki the heel, but the goal was not to beat the living hell out of each other. They were well suited; both of them had a high-flying style.
The working schedule for ATW was Friday through Tuesday, one additional day over the PCW schedule of four shows at a stretch. The difference was that all the ATW shows were held at Korakuen, and while the physical toll was the same on the wrestlers’ bodies, the mental strain was removed as there was no need to travel.
Things settled into a routine. Brad slept late each morning, grabbed a quick snack from the lobby vending machine, and walked over to Korakuen. As there was a gym in the complex, he worked out there and spent his idle time talking to the rest of the crew. He wasn’t guaranteed a match each and every night, but when he did have a match he thrived on the response from the crowd.
With the difference in time and Scott’s and Brad’s varied schedules, it was difficult for them to find the time to talk. Brad took to sending e-mails where he poured out his love and was gratified when Scott responded in kind. The Wi-Fi situation at the hotel was so questionable that the planned Skype sessions were far too infrequent. Although they missed each other, Brad knew the heat between them had not diminished.
Everything went well until right around the four-week mark. Just as Brad began to long for home in earnest, the proverbial shit hit the fan.
