Chapter

Fifteen

The air in Professor Eastey’s classroom turned ice cold, so cold I couldn’t breathe. My destiny to fight evil? Did that mean the Master? The blood drained from my face. How could I do this by myself?

But then I thought of everything I had done since I came here…at the Nightshade crypt…at St. Christopher’s Church…at the palace. I had never fought any of those battles alone. I always had help.

I lifted my chin. “Does my destiny say I have to fight the Master alone?”

He stared at me curiously. “No, it doesn’t. It just means you will eventually face him and enter into battle.”

Some of the fear slithering around inside me faded away.

“Your friends have been helpful…especially Valentin.”

My cheeks ballooned red and a flush ran through me as if I had just been wrapped in a large comforter.

He laughed. “Nothing to be ashamed of, Rose. I suspected he was your mate, but I take it the prince thought he would be?”

This was getting a little too personal. “Yes, I guess so.”

He studied me. “You must be careful with Prince Rocco. I sense he’s not given up on you.”

“No, he hasn’t. I need to ask you something about him.”

“What about?”

“He hasn’t been acting like himself. In fact, he’s been acting more like Grayson. He’s never done that before. Do you think he’s cursed or under a spell?”

Professor Eastey’s clear blue eyes clouded over for a brief second and then he blinked. The storm was gone. “At dinner, I didn’t pick up any dark magic around him. However, we are dealing with dark forces that are powerful than mine.”

“So, he could be under a spell?”

“Possibly. Or he could be just blind with jealously like Grayson was over your mother.”

My throat went dry. “He was?”

“Yes, but your mother only had eyes for Tobias.”

A deep dread gripped me. I didn’t want the same thing happen to me like it did to her. “This so frustrating. There is someone who I believe is his mate, but he won’t accept her.”

“He must come to this realization on his own. You telling him will only make him more determined to claim you. Do you understand?”

I sighed and chewed on my lip. “Yeah, I guess.”

“Good. Before we conclude today, I would like to teach you a protection spell, or maybe a better word be a cloaking spell. The Master and Ari can track you because of your magic. You can’t turn it off, and it leaves a trail, so to speak. You must learn how to hide it.”

I threaded my fingers through my hair. “How?”

“Same as anything. Practice. I will teach you the Vinculum Occultum cloaking spell.” He cast his gaze over me. “But first, I’ll need a lock of your hair. Three strands, to be exact.”

I frowned. This class was weird. “That’s a strange request.”

“Believe me, it’s necessary.”

“Okay.” I pulled out three strands, wincing. “Now what?”

He gave me a teasing smile as he retrieved some more jars from another shelf. “Haven’t you heard patience is a virtue?”

He opened one jar and pulled out three leaves.
