Brodea returned up the stairs just in time to watch an enraged Whísper drive the spear into the wizard’s guts. The First Councilor broke into a run, scrambling to make it to the wizard in time. Whísper let go of his hair and let him fall away. Brodea screamed as she reached out for the plummeting boy but she was too late. He toppled over, and tumbled down below, screaming the whole way.

Brodea straightened and looked to her fury driven daughter. “What have you done?”

Whísper didn’t give her satisfaction of an answer. Instead, her dark eyes flashed with the contentment of cold-blooded murder. “Find yourself another scribe,” she said icily, “I have a head to claim.”

Whísper then plowed past the First Councilor and proceeded to walk down the stairs. Brodea was in a state of shock. What could she do? What would she tell the council?

She tried to listen for anything from the Spirits. Any guidance at all, but there was nothing. Her thoughts were hers and hers alone. And they were dark.
