Chapter Ten

New Operative

Penny had never packed so fast in her life. “I have three hours to gather our essentials and get to the airport.” She felt nearly giddy with joy. “That’ll be at land speed record for me.”

Her only concern was figuring out how to get out of the fortress undetected. She pondered using her previous escape route, but considering she recently used it, she felt it was prudent to go with the other, less familiar option.

She gazed at her suitcase, fully aware she couldn't pack everything she needed. “I can only take bare essentials,” she murmured, “There’s only one of me, and I have a lot to carry.”

She stared at the gear spread across her bed, most of it belonged to Horatio. She turned toward him. “You’re lucky I love you,” she said, “or I’d have to skimp on your diapers... your food... your toys... good lord, boy, you need a lot of stuff... and I know I forgot something...” She swept him into her arms and squeezed him tight. “I adore you my little muffin.” Then they giggled.

She completed packing as best she could, always careful to keep her activity private, mindful of any noises that would betray someone approaching their bedroom. But she lucked out. She finished her task without interruption, carefully testing the weight of the luggage, making sure she could manage it while carrying her child.

“I can handle this,” she breathed, “if I take a few breaks...”

As she snuck out of their chambers, she looked behind one last time. “I’ll come back,” she whispered, “some day. Maybe.”

With her bare necessities in tow, she headed down the long hallway to her escape. Wheeling one small suitcase behind her, she carried Horatio on her hip, dreading the moment when his weight became unmanageable.

Squeezing through the narrow tunnel, she mentally recited prayers for safe travel. Despite the mixture of fear and sadness swirling in her belly, it felt fabulous to regain a modicum of control over her life. She knew Jonathan wouldn't be pleased, but it was high time that she start living rather than wait for him to join her.

“Today, I’m free,” she hummed as she stepped outside the arid Loran air. “Today, I’m my own person.”

Within seconds, she found herself inside a cab heading for the airport. She glanced at her notes. “I know exactly where to find our papers. My prepaid credit card is loaded to the max. By the time I get to Minnesota, he won't be able to stop me.” She melted into her seat.

“May the adventure begin.”

*****

“You realize we’re taking a chance, getting involved in this.”

“We are. But, Larry’s a great operative. He's proven his loyalty time and time again. We owe this to him.”

The two de facto heads of the RNF sat in their dark office, pondering the ramifications of their latest action.

“Agreed,” said Jim, “This is the right thing to do. However, I'm wondering if it’s the smartest choice.”

McNally laughed. “Since when have I ever done the smart thing?”

Since the RNF blew up, their professional operatives scattered to the four winds.
