PROF held my gaze, making me sweat. Sparks, that man could be intense. He wanted to pretend that his was a quiet, careful groupâand in truth, it mostly was. If you didnât count him. He was like me. He always had been.
And because of that, I knew how deadly serious he was.
I licked my lips. âIâm planning to capture one of Regaliaâs Epics,â I said. âWhen we hit Newton, I want to try to neutralize her instead of killing herâthen I want to capture her. Like we did with Edmund back in Newcago.â
Prof regarded me for a moment, then seemed to relax, as if that wasnât nearly as bad as heâd feared. âWhat would be the point?â
âWell, we know Regalia is devious. Sheâs planning something more than weâve been able to figure out.â
âPossibly.â
âProbably. Youâve said sheâs wily. Youâve implied sheâs very careful, and very clever. Sparks, Prof, you have to be worried that sheâs playing us all, even now.â
He turned away from me. âI will admit that it has crossed my mind. Abigail has a habit of ⦠positioning people, myself included, in places where she wants them.â
âWell, she knows you. She knows what youâll do.â I grew more excitedâit seemed that I might have dug myself out of a bad situation. âShe wonât expect you to try a kidnapping, then. Itâs too bold, and not at all in line with the Reckoner methodology. But think what it could accomplish! Newton might know what Regalia is up toâat the very least, sheâll know how Regalia is recruiting these other Epics.â
âI doubt weâd learn much,â Prof said. âAbigail wouldnât share that kind of information.â
âWell, at the very least, Newton could tell us places that Regalia has appeared to her,â I said. âWhich will help with our map. And thereâs the chance she knows more. Right?â
Prof tapped the submarineâs steering stick, the bubble-like window before him glowing with filtered light from above. âAnd how would you plan to make her talk? Torture?â
âWell, actually, I was kind of hoping that by keeping her from using her powers ⦠you know ⦠weâd make her turn good or something.â
He cocked an eyebrow at me.
âIt happened with Edmund,â I said defensively.
âEdmund wasnât a murderer before his transformation.â
Well, that was true.
âBeyond that,â Prof said, âEdmund is good because he gifts his powersâlike I do. He didnât âturn good.â He just never went evil in the first place. What you really meant, but didnât want to say it for fear of angering me, is that Firefight seemed to be good when she was with us. Youâre hoping that by preventing Newton from using her powers, you can get proof that doing the same for Firefight will return Megan to you.â
âMaybe,â I said, shrinking down in my chair.
âThis is just the sort of thing I worried you were considering,â Prof said. âYou could have endangered the entire team by pursuing your own goals, David. Canât you see that?â
âI suppose,â I said.
âIs that everything?â Prof asked me. âNo other hidden plots?â
I grew cold.
