Twenty-Nine

Rebwar was back at his “office” which was the Shishawi. He’d taken a table at the back of the restaurant. The ones at the front had a mixture of tourists and locals smoking their Shishas. This was something he usually liked to do, but today he needed some privacy as he needed to talk to Raj. Rebwar had already pre-ordered food and drinks with his friend Berker, the Kurdish waiter. He wanted to spoil Raj and guilt him in to working his IT magic to find out more about Bywater, the dodgy company Rebwar had been working for. In the last few weeks, he’d been missing in his boy cave. Rebwar couldn’t really pay him what he was worth and what he probably made doing the odd freelance job.

But he could entertain him at least, and a feast was an easy way to get to him. Since this case had started, Rebwar’s appetite had gone. It wasn’t a pleasure to eat, more a necessity. It had always been like this in the force back in Iran. Other colleagues needed food to think; he needed cigarettes and coffee. This case frustrated him. He needed to take the initiative and Raj could help him do that.

His high-pitched little giggle heralded his arrival at the front of the restaurant, and he was soon waddling towards Rebwar’s table. He was even more substantial than Rebwar remembered, his sideways sway filling the spaces between the tables.

‘Hey uncle, how’s it hanging? Wow, what happened to your face? That looks raw.’

Rebwar got up and gave him a hug, his arms struggling to reach around him. ‘Good, Raj, good. Sit down and prepare for a long story. First, I have a feast for you. Beer?’

‘Oh yes! Can’t wait, I’m starving.’ he grimaced. ‘Only had a cheeky little cheeseburger on the way down as I walked.’ Rebwar couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the prospect of Raj walking anywhere voluntarily. ‘Needed some air.’ He giggled again.

‘Good, good. Berker has something special lined up for you. Been busy?’

‘Always. The internet never stops. Just been trying to crack a new game. Making a plug-in so you can win without having to pay to win. You know… giving something back to those poor players who can’t afford to pay out thousands to win a game. Those fucking developers are crooks.’

Rebwar refrained from asking more as Berker arrived with three bottles of Becks. He brushed his thick moustache and adjusted his black waistcoat. ‘Hey, Raj nice to see you. You know Rebwar still doesn’t know what a computer is.’

‘No need to, it’s all on the phone now,’ Rebwar said. ‘I am ahead of the game.’

Raj and Berker laughed. ‘Please don’t change. So, you ready for a little mezze?’

‘Bring it on,’ said Raj.

‘Any luck with that company?’ said Rebwar.

Raj took a large gulp of his beer. ‘Yeah about that. Not easy to crack without being found out. The site sits in the dark web. Clever. Well, Silk Road was, and they paved the way…’ Raj giggled at his own joke.
