Chapter Twenty

Ronan arrived home at four in the morning. He hoped to get in three, maybe four hours of sleep before he headed over to his Grandma’s house to help with New Year’s Day dinner.

Thank God, he managed to get away with a quick once over from the paramedics at the scene of the fire or he would still be hung up at the hospital with paperwork and a pointless exam.

The lock clicked over on his front door as he turned the key. It had been the best and worst New Year’s Eve of his life.

The fire at the bar looked a hell of a lot like the garage fire they had put out earlier that day. Gasoline. He would have to phone Keith and tell him about Janis’s theory, about a fireman starting the fire. Or one who didn’t make the cut.

“Hi.”

Ronan whirled to face his sister. “Jesus, Kelly Ann.”

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.” His sister lay curled up on his couch, bundled in the blanket he kept there for nights he was too damn tired to make it to bed. Two empty beer bottles sat on the coffee table. Diego.

He hung his jacket up on the back of the door and crossed to the couch to sit beside her. She snuggled up against his side, and he didn’t hesitate to wrap her in his arms.

“What’s going on? Are you all right?” he asked.

“I’m fine.” She looked up at him with those big, innocent eyes.

“Kel. Talk to me.”

“I wanted to make sure you were okay. We dropped Cara off, then Diego heard about the fire from one of his friends at the station. We drove back and saw the guys from the other crew spraying water on Andie’s. I called you, but your phone wasn’t on. The ambulances were gone, and I drove to the hospital, but they said you hadn’t checked in. So I came here and waited.”

“Where’s Diego?” Ronan asked.

“He stayed with me for an hour or so, then took a cab home.” She smiled. “He says he owes you a few beers.”

Ronan raised an eyebrow.

Kelly Ann smacked his leg. “He was a gentleman.”

“Mm hmm.” He squeezed her hand. “I’m sorry I worried you. I’m okay. Promise.”

“Don’t lie, Ronan.”

He released a breath. “Well, my back is sore, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.”

“Did they give you something for the pain at the hospital?” she asked.

“Don’t worry about me,” he said. “You girls have a good night? Besides the obvious ending.”

“We did. Oh, and I think Cara likes Mike.”

Ronan snorted. “All the girls like Mike.”

She bit her lip. “I don’t.”

Ronan lifted a brow. “Want to tell me about that?”

A five-alarm blush appeared on her cheeks and she dropped her face to his shoulder. “Diego kissed me at midnight.”

“I figured.” But he didn’t love the idea.

“You probably didn’t notice. You were tonsils deep with Alison.”

Ronan took a moment to savor the memory. “Don’t change the subject.”

“I like him, Ronan.”

He nodded. “I know you do.”

She met his gaze. “Why
