UPSETTING REVELATIONS

THE MORNING WAS A COLD AND CLOUDY ONE with the sun barely discernable in its attempts to crest over the low rolling horizon of the Kent countryside. When Mrs. P and Rebecca arrive at Chatsby Court, they are greeted by a young Constable on guard at the door. They observe his posture, quickly becoming rigidly to attention. He straddles his legs apart, at the same time placing his hands behind his back.

He starts to inform them that due to the nature of the investigation, both the library and the flat are restricted areas until they conclude their site investigations later that day. He then coughs covering his mouth with his black leather-gloved hand: “Many items from the kitchen have been taken for examination, mainly opened goods etc. But it’s accessible."

“Oh no, the Inspector never said anything about this earlier,” Rebecca gripes and turns and asks, “And how about you Mrs. P, where are you going to sleep?”

“Well–––to tell you the truth Miss, I really don’t feel like staying in the stables right now, not by myself, if you knows what I mean.”

Rebecca knew precisely what she meant by “If you knows what I mean” this time, a slightly overused term by Mrs. P, but most endearing non-the-less. Respecting her decision, she wonders now where she’ll sleep that night, and if she can make it up the stairs with her bad hip?

Things become more problematic when they arrive in the kitchen to find that pretty well everything, tea, coffee, dried goods, all but canned products missing from the cupboards,–––the cupboards were literally bare.

“What the hell are we going to do for food?” Rebecca cries.

She then notices a large cardboard box sitting on the sink counter. Curiously she peers inside it to discover it filled with supplies including, tea, coffee, cocoa, and various dried and canned goods, including some fresh produce. She reaches in and pulls out a note and begins to read it aloud.

“With the complements of the Kent County Constabulary; you will find milk and dairy products in the fridge

Inspector, Sean O’Leary.”

They sit around the table, with Rebecca getting up moments later to fill a kettle with water. Moving to the sink, she says: “That was thoughtful! It must have been hard for him to arrange all this in such short notice, or do you think people in his position experience this kind of thing on a daily basis?”

Mrs. P is not paying much attention to Rebecca’s musing when she adds: “Well, I think a strong cup of tea with a little something in it will do us a power of good, eh Mrs. P?”

Rebecca then goes to a substantial pine cupboard at the far end of the ample kitchen where she’s sure, from memory to find liquor for cooking and returns with a small bottle of cognac. She twists off its cork and starts adding some to the teacups, with Mrs. P waving her hand: “No thank you, dear, not for me.”

Seconds later Mrs. P’s face is buried in a handkerchief, sobbing uncontrollably.
