The queen’s body was limp, and her body was slumped in the chair with one arm slung over the side. The festivities were continuing long into the night but as the queen roused herself, the only people left in the great hall were servants dozing on benches as they waited to clear the tables, and drunken noblemen singing bawdy songs.

There was no sign of an enchantress, and Rapunzel wrapped her furs around her shoulders covering the shredded dress and hurried to her bedchamber. She was exhausted and needed a bath but did not wish for any company as her mind roamed over the evening’s activities. She explained the ruined dress to her chambermaid as a clumsy count who stumbled over her as he led her in a dance.

Guilt weighed on her shoulders as she thought of Gisela and how she would explain her digressions. But her majesty was weary and when she was finally abed, she fell asleep remembering her body spasming as the unseen sorcerer tormented her.

As the queen slumbered, the candles burned down, and the fire went out leaving only glowing embers in the fireplace. Despite being in a deep sleep, Rapunzel woke with a start. With no light in the room and velvet curtains covering the windows, shadows swirled around her. A sliver of light peeked in between a gap in the drapes, and the queen trembled convinced that someone was in the chamber.

“Who is there?” she called.

There was no answer and gooseflesh stabbed at her skin. Rapunzel grabbed the sash to call the servants when suddenly she heard a giggle from the gloom.

The queen sighed and her chest heaved as she was convinced this was Gisela paying her an early Valentine’s visit.

“Is that you, Gisela? I know that laugh. Show yourself.”

A rustle in the corner near the fireplace reassured her it was Gisela playing tricks, and she flung back the covers waiting to welcome her lover into her bed for the first time in many weeks.

A shadow moved in front of the scarlet embers and drew closer to the bed. The queen trembled and broth flowed from her entrance dampening the sheets as she anticipated the hours to come. She flung off her nightgown and spread her legs wide. She wished for her Valentine’s Day surprise to be visible as Gisela emerged from the shadows, and her damp thighs quivered as she waited to be taken.

Her majesty giggled and said, “I am ready my dear. I have a surprise for you.”

A dark shape loomed over Rapunzel. She squinted as she made out the curled locks tossed over the woman’s shoulder. The queen gasped as Gisela had long hair to be sure, but it was straight not curly and much longer.

Snatching the quilt and pulling it up to her chin, she stammered, “You are not Gisela.”

A deep throaty voice answered, “No, your majesty. I beg your pardon if I gave you that impression, but we have met.”

“Show yourself,” Rapunzel spat out the words as she pushed herself backward again the carved wooden headboard.
